Make Toads a Species Tag

Posted under Tags

BUR #36516 has been rejected.

category toad_(mario) -> gen

This might be controversial, but I think this tag should actually be a species tag. Toads are a recognizable species in the Marioverse, have tons of named characters to their name, and also, while admittedly not many, there are personifications (or is it humanization in this case? Both searches brought up results) in our gallery. This tag is ostensibly for the character, yet I still see it tagged on things like post #8623039 that don't have him in sight, yet does have toads. I think this should be a species tag instead.

"But what about the character just called Toad?" Red Toad (Mario). It's supposed to be for any toads wearing a red vest, but it still gets used on the one with the blue vest more often than not (post #8626665, post #8493162, post #8305432). I think if the distinction really matters, you can search "red_toad_(mario) red_vest" or whatever just fine. I just think the tag might benefit more from being a gen species tag.

The wiki would need reworking were this to go through, but I'd like to see the chances of this BUR even passing before contemplating that.

This would look dumb in the tag list and set a precedent to do this en masse for many Mario characters, mostly due to their unique versions in the Paper Mario series. Imagine if we did the same for Koopa Troopa because of Kooper, Goomba because of Goom Goom, Yoshi because of Mini-Yoshi, Lakitu because of Lakilester and so on. I don't want this.

red_toad_(mario) has no wiki; it's much more likely to be for Toads with red heads. They're like Yoshis in that there's several colors of them.

This is tricky because there's Toad-the-character and Toad-the-species, and while technically they're different things, in practice there's often not a clear distinction between the two. The difference is supposed to be that the "real" Toad has red spots and a blue vest, but that's not always adhered to in the games, let alone in fanart. Take a look at the Mario wiki and see how much confusion there is over which Toads are the real Toad and which are other Toads.
