What is hime cut?

Posted under Tags

This may sound like an unnecessary question. Hime cut is a very iconic hairstyle, everyone knows what it is. But after revising the current tag I noticed some grey areas that has neither reached a general agreement (outside definition) nor are specified by the wiki (our definition). The goal is not really to argue about the outside definition because it's not always the most suitable for tagging, and frankly I've heard it both ways. But we need a standardization for our version.

So:
Is hair that is not loose hime cut?
Is hair with sidelocks that are not at cheek length hime cut?
Is hair with no sidelocks/sidelocks that are not blunt hime cut?

Honestly I don't think we need to argue on the last one but surprisingly I see a lot of them under hime cut.

Hime cut has a bit of a reputation for being applied too broadly, but not so broadly that it attracts a lot of attention. If it is to be expanded into something including non-straight long hair like post #5701688, instead of being cleaned up, that should get some discussion first.

I added that part because Victorica de Blois is a very iconic case of non-straight hair hime cut. Her bangs and sidelocks are the textbook appearance of a hime cut, generally she is seen as a hime cut.

Regarding the expansion of the tag, I think it's way more important to discuss why people are counting twintails, hair buns, sidelocks that are longer than your face, sidelocks that aren't even blunt all as hime cut. After looking through the tag, I noticed that a lot of people see hime cut as "any hairstyle with blunt bangs and sidelocks", or honestly not even the sidelock part. This contradicts with what I've always known about hime cut. In my impression hime cut has always been about loose hair, at most ponytail, and the sidelocks are very important, because blunt bangs alone is very common and not enough to make the hairstyle iconic, ideally the sidelocks should be at about cheek level.
