Reclassifying Alluka Zoldyck as *other

Posted under Tags

BUR #30627 has been rejected.

mass update alluka_zoldyck solo 1boy rating:g -> 1other other_focus -male_focus

topic #28626

Based on evidence provided in the above topic, it seems unclear what this character's physical sex actually is. The Hunter's Guide states that this character is male, but the Guide's reliability has been thrown into question (forum #304147). Most other evidence seems to be based on dialogue from other characters, which varies between calling them a boy or a girl.

The purpose of this BUR is to reclassify Alluka Zoldyck from 1boy to 1other when no primary or secondary sex characteristics are visible. Obviously, this will not cover every case, so some tag gardening afterwards will be required. This BUR is mainly to allow users to vote on the matter and provide additional arguments/evidence for Alluka's physical sex. Please be sure to review the evidence already provided in the linked topic above.

The linked pixiv encyclopedia article lists the theory that she is a biological girl, raised as a boy. This would be indeed an explanation why different characters use different gendered terms when referring her. I wonder if this is a plausible theory, or there are arguments/evidences against it?

Killua's frustration with the Zoldycks' abusive treatment of Alluka does include that she's being raised as a son, so in terms of gender, I generally see people treat Alluka as a girl. Birth sex is the divisive part. I don't think there's any bits where the series uses "he was born a boy" or "she was born a girl" as a justification for either side. Even the Hunter's Guide doesn't exactly say this, despite Fandom's summary.

Support mainly due to the fan division documented in the previous thread.

As the OP of the post that started this whole mess, I think *other is fine. I think it is important to remember that even the Japanese community debates this heavily while they have the most evidence to work with. Also the possessed nature of this situation really messes things up, pushing me towards *other.

She’s canonically a female character. Her birth sex is unconfirmed. Whatever dumbass keeps retagging her as male on here clearly has a fetish for underage femboys because the logical way to tag her is as a girl, which we know she is, or as other based on her unknown sex.

  • If it is

unclear what this character's physical sex actually is

Why only move from boy to other? And not girl to other as well? (of course, taking into account the genderswap posts)

  • You write

the Guide's reliability has been thrown into question (forum #304147)

But this linked post says only that

In the Hunter's Guide released on 2004/6/9, they [Alluka Zoldyck] are introduced as "Killua's younger brother" (page 39). (However, the Hunter's Guide has numerous errors, including Milluki's age and Nobunaga's birthday, so it is not a fully credible source.)

Why are these considered errors? Because official material provided a correction? Or because some vocal fans didn't like their canonical ages and came up with their own? I assume the former.
It is pointless to use a Guide, if you just say that any information you personally don't like is "unreliable".

A policy was introduced last year to only tag Alluka as 1boy. Any applicable posts remaining in 1girl would also be moved, but there aren't enough of them to justify a mass update per se.

Milluki's age was confirmed in chapter 69 and Nobunaga's birthday was confirmed in chapter 104. Both of these were published before the Hunter's Guide and therefore would have been noted as inconsistencies around the time it was released.
This article shows a few more examples of points in the Guide that have been disputed.

It’s important to note that supplementary materials for jump manga are often not written by the author themselves. There are massive inconsistencies in the hxh databook that have since been retconned or proven wrong by Togashi himself. Maha and Milluki’s ages, the nen type of Silva and Zeno, etc. Either way, the book doesn’t actually state Alluka’s sex despite that misinfo being on the English wiki. We have literally zero proof of her sex but because the fandom can’t wrap their heads around a sexually ambiguous character they make up evidence to prove she’s one or the other. All we know is her identity is female, which is what really matters but I digress. We will probably never know what she was born as so just tag her as 1other. Also the genderswap tags are unnecessary since there’s no default for her.
