Hair length tags clarification

Posted under General

The wiki defines the hair length tags as follows:

short hair is above the shoulders
medium hair is shoulder length
long hair is past the shoulders
very long hair is past the waist.

What I want to clarify is how length is determined in the case of tied hair. For example, posts such as post #8150024 and post #7554682 only reach shoulder-length when tied, but would fall past the shoulders when untied. Should they be tagged as medium hair or long hair? Do we tag the expected length of the strands, or the style as a whole from a resting position? I have tried to search for a written precedent, but came up short, so I am interested in hearing people's thoughts.

With the exception of shit like post #4235178, hair length should be tagged based on how far down the style falls (or would fall) when pulled by gravity, not expected strand length if the style were untied. We should not be making users guess how far down the hair would hang if it were untied; there's never one single answer to that question, and it leads to inaccurate searches. Measuring whether the hair is long or medium is already something some users struggle with; telling them "oh btw, there's different rules if it's hairstyle X, Y, or Z" is just asking for constant maintenance to be required for hair length tags.

Take post #7072556, for example. It's pretty obvious to anyone that her hair would be long if untied. However, it's the opposite of what users searching for long_hair are looking for. Another issue crops up within post #4806134 - do we tag this very_long_hair, because we know the character's hair is very long when untied? No, because that would be stupid. The same logic applies to other hairstyles as well.

What Zapdos said. Tied hair lengths should be tagged as they actually appear, because 1) length-wise, a short ponytail ending at the chin is visually identical to a male short hair style ending at the same point, and 2) tagging things hypothetically involves personal opinions, and we already know how that shakes out thanks to silver hair (rest its soul).

I'd also like to point out short hair with long locks, an awesome tag practically made for this situation that people don't use often enough.

Tangential, but I don't like post #7352787 embedded at the top of short_hair / medium_hair / long_hair wikis. As I understand, the first version, labeled as "default" should be tagged with short_hair too. If that's the case, then it is confusing/misleading.

Also someone has removed medium_hair from the picture.

That medium hair removal is definitely wrong, I've added it back. Ideally "default" would say "short" too, yes, but you have to be some sort of bot to not figure out what's being meant, realistically.
