Tagging insignificant cameos

Posted under General

And untrue! You're abusing statistics. In fact, every person is different and their sleeping schedules reflect that.

I can see some value in the _(cameo) tags (what 葉月 said), but the problem lies in the fact that we'd have to go through our several cubic bazillion images of cameos in order to make this relatively frivolous addition.

I could really care less which way we go right now but it needs to be consistent across all the images. I hit the wrong button and ended up on the tag list to find a bunch of cameos tagged with _(cameo) but even within the images it seemed to be random as to if it was added as a complimentary tag or independent.

I didn't bother to check who did which but I'm sure you'll see this. (or someone can look it up for public shame I suppose.)

You're probably talking about me. On some posts I typed out the full character_name_(cameo) and on some posts I got lazy and just added _(cameo) to the existing tag. I'm still waiting on a consensus as to which way they should be tagged.

OTOH, it's "I couldn't care less". What you just said (or wrote) makes no sense.

Oops I edited the wording like 3 times and that one slipped through. There were far more grammatical errors the second time I read it. (It was "could give a shit" initially but I wanted to be less crude.)

It appears that we do so with cosplay, so if we wanted to handle cameos the same way I suppose we would have to.

Despite reluctantly okaying it earlier (mostly because I hadn't thought about it enough) I really think everything would be much easier if we just scrapped the cameo concept entirely and stick with what we do. I'm not convinced it's a very important tagging concept.

If the only really important purpose a _(cameo) tag concept serves is to help someone figure out who that tiny character in the background is, then hell, I honestly think sticking a note on the image is a much better solution.

Edit: oh god there was a whole second page to this thread.

Sorry for bumping this back up but I stumbled upon post #483556 a couple months ago and asked if the _(cameo) tags were at all necessary. I haven't gotten a response, so I searched forums and found this thread. I assume from jxh's post above that it's not a good idea, but there doesn't seem to be clear consensus whether to keep or get rid of (cameo) tags. I'm all for getting rid of 'em, simply because it's redundant to the character tags.

Updated

sorry to bring this up again. i just noticed that character_(cameo) tags are increasing (3 pages deep) and many of them have very few entries. and how i understand the last few comments there seems to be no final verdict yet.

my personal contribution for the discussion would be, i think the base character tag combined with cameo tag would be sufficiently enough. and i support the earlier suggestion to use a note if the character is so small or very hard to find.

i'm just curious if what particular course of action we will employ. thanks.

Updated

Personally I think letting it run its course would be the best approach and just let users continue to generate such tags.

That type of search would prove inadequate for what you're suggesting it does, as that would only prove useful in images where there is like only 1 taggable character. Using it for any image with more than 2 characters would result in no real useful information about the image except that a cameo exists in it. There is no way to get specific on whether a character is the cameo or not without generating a specific tag, so don't try and use that as a work around, as it will not really work. We just need to acknowledge that that route will have a gross amount of data loss, and just accept that if that route is chosen.

ok, i see. maybe it's best to leave it as it is now, besides the list is so large now for manual undertaking. it's just my personal opinion that somehow the cameo tag already fulfills its purpose. or should we change its type to ambiguous tag like alternate costume too?

actually, there are some posts with cameo tag but without the character_(cameo) tag yet. i just want to know some ideas before creating new tags. thanks.
