Swap "Fake censor" with "Unnecessary censorship" alias

Posted under Tags

BUR #30182 has been rejected.

create alias fake_censor -> unnecessary_censorship
remove alias fake_censor -> unnecessary_censorship

The current name for the tag "fake censor" is misleading for what it is supposed to be used for, since the tag was meant to be used for when censorship is used on something that is not worth censoring, like car wheels for example.

Calling it "fake censor" would be misleading, since there's an actual censorship measure present in the image. So I guess we should've just swapped it with the "unnecessary censorship", which is currently applied as an alias for some reason.

Updated

I personally never found much of an issue with the existing name, but I can see how it could be made clearer. But as such I don't see how it's worth removing the alias and fucking with people's muscle memory, scripts etc for an established tag like this.

I'm a little concerned about potential confusion between this tag and pointless censoring given their similar names, but we maintain things like the very problematic off shoulder and off-shoulder_* already so it should be fine as long as it receives occasional oversight.

The (frankly ridiculous) off-shoulder situation is also a thing, but there's also only like 25 instances of the tag being removed. Considering this tag is turning 14 years old in 3 weeks, I don't think it should be considered much of an issue going forward. It also feels like it's underused, this new name would probably help findability.

Again, "fake censorship" imply that there are no actual censorship measures used on the image. While "Unnecessary censorship" means the censorship is not needed since there's nothing worth censorship at the first place. These are two different things and hence rename.

And again, you're speaking from *your* perspective, not other's perspective.

I am speaking form my perspective because that's specifically what I intend to contribute to this discussion. IMO, "fake censorship" is not as clear as it could be, but I personally have no trouble seeing it in the way it's used currently. unnecessary_censorship would be an improvement, but I don't see it as enough of an imporvement to warrant the potential issues that come with a rename.

I agree that fake censor is misleading, but I think something like unexpected censorship would be better than unnecessary censorship.

I also think that pointless censoring should be changed to incomplete censorship or inadequate censorship.

I agreed with "Inadequate censorship" since it means the measure is not enough to cover the subject, while "Incomplete censorship" imply that the subject is not fully censored, which means this also imply that most of the bar censor is "incomplete" censor.
