"Sign up" option removal permanent?

I've surfed the site before, and after it went down.
I'm assuming that it's no longer possible for those coming to the site now to get an account?

You need an invite. You can't get one unless you know someone.

I'd rather people were given limited accounts instead of having everyone comment as Anonymous. In fact, I'd make registration mandatory.
Then, if people with limited accounts seem to be good contributions, maybe we can give them invites.

While I can't speak for Albert, it sounds like a decent idea. I dunno about making registration mandatory -- at least leave a view-only anon mode -- but I can see an intermediate level of membership (indicated in the username somehow, so we know who?) that lets us take note of people who are helpful in various ways.

Then yeah, we could consider inviting them. Though it'd be best if there were some sort of PM system so they don't have to post their email addresses in public. Then again, thats what spam accounts are for I guess.

Limited accounts for comments could also serve as a solution to the pharmacy spam problem. The spam level isn't too bad right now but it would still be one less headache for whoever has to clean that stuff up.
