You're the best reference for handling artist tags and the Discord was incredibly unhelpful with each participant having their own headcanons about artist aliasing. I remember we resolved this before but I forgot to apply that here. Right now I can't change the names.

The current artist entry is mml1203497123 (2021), but we want to name it xiao_ze_miao (2024) and keep the 2021 entry. We can start by making a BUR to move the posts to xiao_ze_miao (2024). Now we mark xiao_ze_miao (2024) as deleted and manually rename it so something else, say xiao_ze_miao_(deleted), just so we can manually rename mml1203497123 (2021) to xiao_ze_miao. Since xiao_ze_miao_(deleted) was deleted, you can rename it to mml1203497123 if you want, basically swapping the artist entries for the tags without having to mess with the posts or the tags themselves. Don't forget to move urls and names.

Bless, thank you once again for the help as always regarding artist tags and for the demonstration. Should not happen a third time when there's a name conflict.
Can someone explain to me what edit history gets lost that necessitates doing all this instead of just aliasing the older artist entry to the one with the right name, even if it's more recent, because I can see all the edits still when I check the history of an older artist entry that got aliased to a newer one.
I don't know why the guideline was created, but the rule is to simply move the newer artist entry out of the way for the alias by renaming and deleting it before approving the BUR. I should've mentioned I manually renamed both as an example so the deleted entry can be easily found until the alias is retired.
