I've been staying clear of threads about player characters because I wasn't sure myself on how to proceed, and I was hoping evazion would've eventually chimed in, but since he hasn't...
I think if the player character is nondescript and featureless, typically it's fine to make gendered tags for it and imply both to it***. If the player character is instead a defined character on its own, such as Fujimaru Ritsuka****, then it doesn't make much sense to have an umbrella tag just for the sake of it.
ใ*** Unless the character is predominantly and overwhermingly depicted as having a specific gender, in which case having an umbrella tag for a 30k post tag and a 500 post tag is a bit ridiculous
ใ**** I'll admit there's still the question of how to deal with posts where you can only see the hand and you don't know if it's one or the other (post #5676573), and I am really not sure how we should deal with those. It really doesn't make sense to have a 22k posts umbrella tag just for a handful (?) of borderline posts.
I'll do the neural cloud professor implications for now because it's a small tag, and because I can already see it having the same problem of edge cases, such as post #6905759.

create implication male_professor_(neural_cloud) -> professor_(neural_cloud)
create implication female_professor_(neural_cloud) -> professor_(neural_cloud)
As above

And so, a new era of rule-lawyering is on the precipice, as "predominantly and overwhelmingly" is at a point where people can argue about the lesser common player protags, such as Commander (Girls' Frontline)/Female Commander (Girls' Frontline) (~1.5k/~600), while keeping the likes of Commander (Azur Lane)/Female Commander (Azur Lane) (~3.5k/~100) or Admiral (KanColle)/Female Admiral (KanColle) (~37k/~5.5k) out of reach in discussion (technically Producer (Idolmaster) too because no one made a female tag).
Rejoice!

Not quite understanding the logic here. Why give the professor an umbrella tag despite that both KJ and FemKJ have unique appearances?
