Apologies in advance for Tag Discussion: MILF

Posted under General

I seem to remember reading somewhere that MILF was considered a subjective tag, but I can't find any real discussion about it in the forums, and there are currently 804 pics tagged this way. The majority of them appear to be based on canon, and some of them appear to just include an age group, some are based on visual cues, and some of them make no sense.

OPTIONS (in no particular order)

- Delete the tag because it's subjective
- Let it remain because the term has evolved, but maybe clean it up and clarify the wiki
- Worry about something else, like stubborn dandruff or that cryptic tattoo that appeared on your forearm or why donuts are so good

Canon: post #503406
Age group: post #495793
Visual cue: post #147194
...huh?: post #34637

Pretty cut and dry. If the chick has kids (according to canon of a series, or the story in an H-game), is hot, then she's a milf. Problem is, you got morons who think the term can apply to any woman whose over a certain age, and that's just stupid. While one can argue where the age limit is for say, loli (more would say 14 and under) people think that any chick over 30 is milf. That'd be like saying a transgender character is futa even if they lack a penis.

How do you assign an age to a drawn character?

The tag is subjective and shouldn't be used because we tag what we see and not what we know about the series, etc.

Pretty cut and dry.

What is cut and dry about that?

Well the wiki for it defines it as "A middle aged woman (usually 35 to 50 years) who still retains her beauty and figure," and I believe elsewhere on the internet it's general use is of that of an age group more than actually being canon. I could kind of see an argument for the age group since in general characters tend to be more toward being young than older, but we could probably just put them into a pool if that's how it'd be used.

For the visual cue I've always thought the tags of mother (since it's been freed of the game) or parent (not utilized either) would be better choices.

I think I did a pretty good job of being neutral, since frankly I just down right hate the term MILF and wouldn't mind seeing it nuked just because I feel it's extremely stupid.

Before I forget it, if we make it a pool could we use another name instead of MILF? The target of the grouping is older women, not mothers.

That's irrelevant. Milf is a widely-recognised word with a fairly obvious meaning. That makes it a very good term and we have no better candidates. It just needs to be defined. IMHO, only the age group makes any sort of sense, ie. the danbooru usage of the term "milf" becomes "attractive, mature woman".

If the the tag is removed there will be no other way to find mature women again. I know that it can be dumped into a pool but ones that come after the tag removal won't be easy to find. It really doesn't matter what the tag is used on as long as it looks like a milf, and if someone disagrees or knows that the character is too young to be a milf or knows that the character doesn't have kids, then the tag can be removed from the image. I have done this before on a few images.

Way I see it, if the woman has children, she's a milf. While I'm not crazy about the term, that's just how most people generalize it. For older, childless women, most would use the term cougar, though I think that means any kind of woman of maturity whose into younger men. A 'Mature' tag could work, but then again it could be argued when the character's personality might not exactly match.

I'm for keeping it. It's no more subjective than the loli tag and it serves a useful purpose in that it describes a known character archetype.

Agreed. This is how I always thought the tag was meant to be used.

Loli is highly based on a body type, rather than the age of the subject. With all the busty teenagers and whatnot in anime, milfs are harder to pick out. I'm not against the tag, but it needs to be better defined or less subjective.

Like I said, a "Mature" tag could work, or something along those lines. MILF does get a little confusing, especially where some series have the girls looking so young you can't tell they're mothers sometimes.

You're confusing "age group" with "canon" in the above classification. Age group == she looks older, not necessarily is defined to be older anywhere.

Things get even more complicated when loli and milf are both applicable tags, as is the case with izumi kanata

Just drop the idea that "milf" is an acronym. It helps nobody to treat it that way. Much like "weaboo", where it came from is a useless bit of trivia as far as the proper usage goes.

A) You misspelled "weeaboo"

B) Much like weeaboo, MILF is a term that needs to die.

Is there a reason we can't just use "mature"?

b) these are very useful words that just capture the essence of what is meant better than anything else.

Yes, there is a reason. Mature means something different than "older, attractive woman".
