How do I tag this?

Posted under Tags

Might need an indie virtual YouTuber expert for this one.

Nottytiffy started drawing her avatar tiffy at least 8 years ago and debuted as an indie virtual YouTuber about 2 years ago. Only 3 posts with tiffy (out of 526 total) are tagged indie virtual YouTuber; the rest are tagged original.

Should all of the tiffy posts be tagged with indie virtual YouTuber instead of original? Or maybe just the ones from after her debut? Or just those that resemble her vtuber design? The design seems to have changed a bit over the years before her debut, but I don't know if that is relevant.

I don't know anything about this vtuber other than what I have seen and read on Danbooru.

I would only tag the ones drawn after her debut as indie virtual youtuber. Similar to how we tag the members who joined or left vshojo.

Does it really make sense that the time of drawing is used and not what's in the picture?

I would argue it does, for the most part - especially if the VTuber in question hasn't changed much in appearance as they bounce from place to place. While it might not be as relevant for the big VTuber companies such as Hololive or Nijisanji, for indies and other VTubers who bounce around lots it makes a lot of sense. Think about someone like Kaneko Lumi, who was originally a member of CyberLive, left and briefly became an indie, and then joined Phase Connect. Her model remained consistent across that entire time, only changing up her looks in the last six months. So, how else would you be able to tag her copyright if not by referring to when the drawing was drawn? Of course, what is in the picture also matters too, especially if, say, it's art that clearly depicts Lumi as a member of CyberLive. It's all about context.

With context in mind, your Suisei example, I'd argue, doesn't apply to that discussion at all. The artist, by tagging it as Hololive on Pixiv to begin with, clearly refers to it more as a general flashback scene of Suisei starting from the bottom, rather than it being concretely indie!Suisei.

Fair. I agree my example is a different situation and I didn't intend to derail the conversation. It just reminded me and felt somewhat related. I just wanted the input of someone more involved with the indie vtuber copytag, as I try to tag it where appropriate but haven't found a reason to specifically search or exclude that tag myself so I don't always know where it's useful.

More on topic, I see the sense of tagging based on drawing time now. It doesn't look perfect but I don't have a better idea. Definitely context should take priority when it's present, as you say.
