Possible Art Trade Tag

Posted under General

Art trades are when two artists give each other a request, fulfill it, and then exchange each other's artwork. It isn't a commission obviously, but it also isn't gift art either.

This situation is one I've mainly observed on DeviantArt (though I hear Instagram has it too). As these art trades, so far as I've observed, is mainly between artists asking each other to draw their OCs, I've made due with the original and borrowed character combo. However, I do occasionally see these trades done with copyrighted characters, which makes this combo completely unviable.

So what I am here to ask is about the viability of a potential art trade tag marking if a post was part of an art trade. It's not a common situation overall, but as it isn't something that our existing tags can cover in all cases, I can see a potential tag in that. I simply would like to ask how other people feel about this idea. The last thing we need is yet another tag mess that will then have to be deprecated and/or nuked, after all.

Art trades are also common on twitter by the way, i'd say it's pixiv on which i've personally never seen a case of art trade (still wouldn't be surprised to find one).

I see no reason why it shouldn't be a tag, to me it would be just as valid as both gift art and commission existing as metatags, and even if it is nowhere near as common as commissions i would assume it would at least end up in the same scale as gift art if tagged properly

Huh! Goes to show my priorities when it comes to Twitter uploads then lol. In any case, that does indicate it's at least common enough to be something I can see someone at least wanting to search and filter for.

It's the tagging it properly that's bound to be an issue. But I suppose that's a common concern with any possibility of a new tag that you then have to populate. I figure it'll be treated the same way our commission tags and other metatag markers for this situation will be treated, but I wanted to check in and ask before creating the tag just in case anyone has any concerns I haven't thought of first. Thank you!

Okay, I created an art trade tag, as well as a short wiki for it, and gardened my own posts that were marked as being part of one in their commentary. Hopefully, this tag will populate itself over time as people find the tag, but as it stands it does exist now.

The wiki and things will probably need to be improved over time, but for now I feel it's off to a pretty good start. Please feel free to garden your posts this new tag would apply to as you wish, and hopefully it won't get deprecated and/or nuked within a couple months.

If the tag will exist, then a clearer explanation for the tags is needed.
second-party source

Collaborations between artists posting on each other's accounts.
Gift art posted by the recipient.

It's easy to confuse sharing when working on art (collaboration), sharing as a gift (the gift art wiki differs from the description), and the tag being discussed.

P.S. Filling in the tag will take some time to read the commentaries.

If it's art trade, then should the other traded artwork be linked too, even if they're not a post in danbooru?

That is a very good question, one I've debated with myself too. Personally, I'd say "no" due to the fact that not all artists give links, and the hassle of tracking the other half down in those cases (and that's not getting into bad id issues). But if you find the other half, feel free to link it.

I'd like a second opinion on this question though.

If they give links or at least the other artist's name, it's probably automatically goes in the commentary I guess. If they don't, it's probably fine not to bother.
