Wait a minute, I just realized that the first costume of a lot of hololive vtubers are under "old design", while their second costumes are under "1st costume" etc. This is objectively wrong. If shiranui_flare_(old_design) is the first costume, and shiranui_flare_(1st_costume) is the second costume, they shouldn't be named as they are right now.

Another reason added to renaming the tags to bear descriptives instead, even when I'd disagree it is objectively stupid. You're not gonna see the old designs for Sora, Suisei, Miko, Nene, IRyS, and so on, being used by the talent anymore. For most folks, what they have as their default now is basically their '1st costume' when compared to all the other ones they have (and, as you yourself said, "among the best known and most unambiguous"), so it only makes sense to lump the 'old designs' elsewhere. You see this sort of division being used on fan websites too, at least for the Holos.

Of course, we'd be getting through the descriptive renaming discourse faster if the discourse hadn't been drowned out by a flood of implication BURs.

Yeah that's why I suggested using (default) instead of (1st_costume) to avoid confusion with vtubers who have gone through full redesigns and had their original designs memoryholed.

For simplicity sake I suggest we just grandfather the existing (old_design) tags specially for characters like Sora, Flare and Miko whose old designs don't really fit a simple descriptor (maybe a case could be made for Nene's chinese outfit and Irys 1.0 model). If any vtuber goes through a redesign then I'd say we go on a case-by-case basis when we come to that bridge.

So would the same thing apply to some VTubers like Nyanners whose old design was only used in some of her old
song videos (and wasn't really a VTuber model) before she gotten her current model?

At this point I think it would be easier to do it one outfit type at a time rather than one character at a time. Do all the swimsuits, all the New Years outfits, all the school uniforms etc first, then figure out what to call all the casual outfits and the first costumes last.

Which is why I put the effort of loosely sorting out the costumes a week ago, easily checkable for everyone and copyable for BURs, and I've even been making sure to update it whenever new costume tags are made! Yet people wanted to go per VTuber instead.

Since she was used as a precedent for not just the creation of VTuber costume tags, but also indirectly descriptive qualifiers for them (partially induced by the popularity of her A.I. Games outfit, and partially by Azur Lane), may as well imply Ai-chan's costume tags too. I'd toss in the "Musician" tag in too, but as it says, it's a composite tag for all the outfits she has worn at her hello, world live shows, 2018, 2020 and 2022, so it would have to be broken up beforehand.
