[Touhou] - Collating the Playable Character comeback/ascension pools into a single universal pool

Posted under General

The title says it all.

Currently, we have two pools - pool #9901, Reisen's ascension, and pool #6960, Sakuya's comeback - that are about the same topic - a character becoming playable for a specific game.

However, there are images of this sort for just about every game in the series, especially relatively uncommon characters, highly requested characters, and so on. For example, post #6588103 of the most recent game would certainly qualify if Orin had a similar pool, as she's been a long-requested playable chararacter, and posts like post #874708 would go for Ten Desires and Youmu. And that's only counting ones where characters are actually confirmed to be playable - there's plenty of posts about characters trying to become playable, or being unhappy that they're not playable, that don't tie into a single game like post #2133010.

Not to mention that the two pools we have are small and basically static at this point, and it's pretty reasonable to approximate them with "character name + game name" as two tags.

What I propose is one pool that covers all playable characters, both their attempts to become playable and celebrations about them being playable in all games.

The reason I think that is the best is that we can use game tags or characters tags to refine the search to a specific instance. For example, if such a pool existed, you could get all of the sakuya's comeback posts by searching for the pool number and Double Dealing Character; if you wanted to see all of Shou's attempts to become playable, you could look up the pool name and shou. you can even extend this to long-desired PC98 vets like Mima. so on and so forth, you could get a reasonable approximation for everyone from one pool.

I don't exactly disagree with a single pool for the concept, however I disagree heavily with both of these points:

Only half of Sakuya's posts are actually tagged DDC, almost none of Reisen's are tagged LoLK or ULiL, and I'm frankly not sure if they should be, as a lot of them don't actually have anything alluding to the relevant game outside of being tagged on Pixiv (example). Before doing away with these pools, if we do, someone has to make sure they're all appropriately tagged, and some of them could still end up being left out because tagging them is debatable.

I'd argue that by the very nature of celebrating that a particular character is playable in a particular game, it should be taggable as that game. By it's very nature, it's referencing a particular game.

Putting that aside, many of the images also do use at least one thing distinct to the game - any new outfits the characters have. for example, many of the Reisen pics use the pose from the official artwork of the game, or the Lunatic Gun. Or they have something else relevant to the game, for example, the playable character cast from that game celebrating the character's return.

Even then, it'd just mean that the character tag is more reliable than the game tag.

If we went with the first option, it's just a case of tag and bag with a bulk update. If we went with the second, well, I have gone through the process of seeding a pool before, i think i started the gluttonous yuyuko pool with like 300 posts? And these two are less than 100 combined. I'd be happy to do the grunt work of tagging each of the existing ones appropriately, if there's a framework people are happy with.
