About cosplay

Posted under General

I was thinking about the cosplay tagged on post #6244330, a question came to mind.
Where should we start considering on cosplay?
On discord, we've been told to look at cosplay when it's a full costume, but there aren't really that many cases where we see a character's full outfit.

This is also the case with the example above: it's not the whole outfit, but features like the black shirt, blue track jacket, jacket_partially_removed, and star_sticker on face make it possible to infer that this outfit belongs to yuuka.
I've added the yuuka_(gym_uniform)_(blue_archive)_(cosplay) tag to a bunch of other posts, but for the rest of the posts, I think it would be fine to clarify the criteria in this thread and work on them.

We've talked about 'is post #3254961 cosplay' before, and said that it's not cosplay because the eyemask she's wearing and the card obviously reminds us of amamiya_ren though, but the outfit has nothing to do with his costume.
In one post, I asked if the elements that can be called cosplay are limited to the outfit.
If so, I'd like to ask your opinion on where in the outfit should be considered cosplay.

It's an upper body illustration. If it's an illustration with a character wearing something plus a single part of another character's outfit, like glasses, hairclip, just a shirt, footwear, whatever, I wouldn't call that cosplay nor would want to see it in a search. I see no problems with different image composition.

I wouldn't really see most posts under yuuka_(gym_uniform)_(blue_archive)_(cosplay) as being cosplay considering it's a uniform for Millennium students, and artists would of course take some styling cues from officially implemented outfits due to the other sprites being simple redraws. Maybe an argument could be made for the ones where Rio wears a ponytail, but personally it's kind of iffy. Even the star sticker I wouldn't pay much heed to. Edit: I'll add that any user attempting to find Blue Archive characters wearing the Track uniforms may simply use buruma or track jacket instead of relying on cosplay tags.

Regarding outfits that appear similar - if the artist does not obviously intend on making it a reference by way of hairstyle, pose/abilities, icons, etcetera, I would also hold off on tagging them as cosplay. Artists can take inspiration from anywhere even without meaning to.

Side note, we don't make cosplay tags for skins, outside of extenuating circumstances. All it does is make it harder to find cosplays by splintering them into multiple tags that rarely get above single digits. Just use yuuka (blue archive) (cosplay).

Also I would be fine treating it as a Yuuka cosplay when it's unmistakable that that's what it is. Someone who doesn't already wear the outfit, or who wouldn't be expected to wear it for starters. Noa wears the same uniform Yuuka does, just with the jacket zipped up. It's not cosplay just because she's wearing it off-shoulder. If she's wearing it like Yuuka and has other details like the star sticker (official word is actually that it's paint), then I'd go ahead and say that's a cosplay attempt.

In that sense, post #6251589 is clearly not cosplay, it's just matching clothes together.
Comparing others to the original Yuuka_(gym_uniform), Noa is zipped_up, Rio is partially_unzipped but not jacket_partially_removed, and Koyuki is conversely jacket_partially_removed but open_jacket, so any of them can't be considered cosplay.
Since each character has their own arrangement, it would be nice to just have a separate tag for costumes, like Kivotos_Halo_Festival_(blue_archive)_(costume).
By the way, that star was facepaint.😮 Learned new today.

also I've also cleaned up the cosplay tags for skins. *_(*)_(blue_archive)_(cosplay)
