The player character is both canonically and by the community referred to as "Warrior of Light", seems this tag was only named avatar for consistence with other MMO chartags.
adventurer (ff14) is the tag for the box cover WoL, the "generic" player character. It's also used by artists to represent a generic player character. Doesn't make much sense for us to keep them apart.
I don't know how supportive I am of a specific title for what amounts to a tag filled with random porn of au ra and miqo'te OCs. Especially given that adventurer is meant to be specifically the boxart man and not actually the player character.
I could see, as a necessity and piece of consistency with outside pratice, alIasing to adventurer or avatar, though.

That's one reason I preferred the old system of having race tags as chartags, and no avatar tag.
But since we're doing an avatar tag, warrior of light (ff14) is much better than just avatar_(ff14). It's the universally accepted name for the player character.

Well, as long as we were also using those race tags for non-OCs, as race tags are always canon-tagged, that was never going to be a sustainable option. And it's not like the old system went away technically, because whether it be as gentags or chartags, those tags were always going to be tagged regardless.
On the BUR, tentatively supportive of the first, but iffy on the second, since the tag was made for OCs, whether as actual player characters or just based on the game's races in general (so they might not be WoL, but they're almost certainly of the artist's [or commissioner's] creation, in contrast to the official Adventurer).
character is more commonly known as "meteor survivor" or just "meteor". just calling him an "adventurer" is pretty unhelpful, as that could refer to....pretty much any major character in the game.

This is incorrect. "Meteor survivor" refers to the players who played the 1.0 (and appear as the end credits of ARR), not for the canon appearance guy. They're "meteor survivors" because they survived the final seconds of 1.0, a literal meteor fall: https://youtu.be/YgEg8kXmifo?t=290. In the final cutscene, that goes for the canon appearance guy, but also for the lalafel, miqo'te and others, so it doesn't make sense to use this name only for the default hyur male.
We don't seem to be tagging these characters currently (they can be told apart by the now unobtainable nape tattoo), but it'd be wrong to alias it away to adventurer (ff14).
It probably makes more sense to rename the adventurer tag to warrior of light (generic) (ff14) or something, I don't know. I don't think I've ever heard him referred to as anything other than that.

It's meant to be the player character. I'm not going to delve into spoilers but in the heavensward expansion there's more clarification and confirmation on that, though it's already obvious from the fact that every trailer of this game has him doing what the player does and wearing various class armors. He's also one of the default player characters that appear as the meteor survivors in the video I linked above.
