It is common to not be able to tell what type of ball something is. It is not common to be unable to distinguish whether something is a party balloon or hot air balloon.

I imagine it is also much more likely for someone to want to look for balls in general than balloons in general.

Well, it's more about the tag, you can literally call a circular, orb-like gemstone a ball. Which is not a useful umbrella in my opinion.
Also, as an aside, it's funny that basketball is an umbrella tag for the ball and the sport, even though other balls have *_(object) versions of them.
