But what if the borrowed garments do not classify as clothes at all? For instance glasses as in post #5855498 or scarf in post #5823449.

I'd argue that "glasses" are neither "clothes" nor "garments" (rather an "accessory"), and that a "scarf" is both "clothes" and a "garment". In my experience, "clothes" and "garment" are entirely synonyms.
