Both tags exist and refer to the same thing.

There are some posts in gachapon_(object) too.

I see some posts about the coin-operated machines, and others about phone games. Maybe an alias isn't the answer, but segregating the tags in usage.

So use gacha for pics related to mobile games, and gashapon for the machines/capsules?

I've also noticed gashapon_machine while exploring the tags, which may be rolled into gashapon.

I think having the two tags so similar in name will just lead to confusion.

I don't see much evidence. gashapon is clean of video games, while gacha required only mild cleanup of machines. It helps that the tags are spelled differently: one with an "s" and the other "c". Plus "gacha" is shorthand/synonymous with gacha games in the West nowadays.

I think it's nice to have gacha as a tag referring mostly to the gacha genre itself, like post #5299236, post #4464101, post #3948596 (and their child posts), for example; and with gashapon referring to the object that is the gashapon machine.

Okay. I've done a little wiki editing to try to make the distinction clearer.

If it helps, from what I remember the gacha videogame genre is "gacha" in japanese too, because "gashapon" was trademarked. So there is a clear distinction between them.
I would still change gashapon to gashapon machine though.

I was gonna suggest renaming gachapon (object) to gachapon capsule as I think that's what the intended use was, but it appears someone nuked it without waiting for the thread to resolve.

There were only like 7 posts in there. You can repopulate it if you want.

I think a tag for the capsules would be good, they have a pretty distinct and well known appearance, even outside Japan. Currently capsule is being used for gashapon capsules, pill capsules, and whatever else.

gashapon can apply to the capsules, while gashapon machine can't, so we either need both tags or the main tag should be gashapon.
