Megami Tensei or Shin Megami Tensei?

Posted under General

Currently, the megami_tensei tag is used inconsistently for several posts in the franchise (mostly for Alice who appears in several games). shin_megami_tensei is clearer as all games that have Shin Megami Tensei in their original titles imply it, however there are still several Persona and megami_ibunroku_devil_survivor pics tagged shin_megami_tensei as well.
What should be done here? Should either one of this become a super tag implied by all games in the franchise? From what I understand, the franchise is usually called MegaTen in Japan, while western players prefer the name SMT. In addition, Megami Tensei could also refer to the Digital Devil Story novels which started the franchise. There are 4 pics of it in the site, and they're lost among all the other megami_tensei posts, only reachable by the names of its characters (shirasagi_yumiko and nakajima_akemi).

Related issues: the Devil Children tag is called shin_megami_tensei_devil_children, and implies Shin_megami_tensei, however the Japanese name does not in fact have Shin Megami Tensei in it.
megami_ibunroku_persona is aliased to persona_1, but devil_survivor is aliased to megami_ibunroku_devil_survivor. Clearly one should be inverted for the sake of consistency.

The main problem is that SMT and Persona share a pool of demons, which leads to certain popular demons like alice_(megami_tensei) being tagged as both Shin_megami_tensei and Persona. She originated in Shin Megami Tensei 1 but naturally a lot of people know her better from Persona. And what of the devil_summoner series? Should that one also be separate from mainline SMT like Persona?
I think we could instead use megami_tensei for the whole franchise, divided into shin_megami_tensei, persona, devil_summoner and others.

Yeah, from what i know of the series Megami Tensei and SMT aren't the same thing. I don't want to state things i don't know, so if anyone knows better please correct me, but the entire series' name is commonly referred to as "Megaten", containing Devil Summoner, SMT, etc.
The main problem i can think of would be that posts specifically about the Megami Tensei games would be unsearchable, since the tag would be flooded with series art.
Alternatively we can treat MT, SMT, and Persona as completely separate entities for tagging purpose, and tag summons like we tag characters in the cygames copyrights (eg. cerberus_(shingeki_no_bahamut)).
Either way, that alias should be undone.

MegaTen is mostly a fan nickname for the franchise used in the Japanese side mostly. The only things that are officially named Megami Tensei are the two original NES games. Everything else is either Shin Megami Tensei, or Megami Ibunroku in the case of Devil Summoner, Persona, and Devil Survivor.

Yeah, that's the thing. One would need to exclude Persona and all other spinoffs if they wanted to see posts with only mainline characters. Would it be advisable to create a tag like demon_(megami_tensei) akin to pokemon_(creature)? That would allow one to search for demons across the franchise without getting SMT and Persona mixed in other searches.
For now I'm gonna remove the shin_megami_tensei tag from any post that doesn't have either mainline SMT characters or demons.
