Don't be distracted by the debate over gem/crystal. The issue mentioned in forum #208068 still has yet to be addressed.
I, for one, remain firmly on the side of abolishing tags like ruby_(gemstone) in favor of tagging the color.

Then someone needs to clean up the gemstone tags. But I figured if no one did that in the past year, no one wanted to.

Indeed, nobody wants to. If you want it done, you'll have to do it yourself. I'm siding with just tagging the colors.

If we're going to do what iridescent slime (and others) support and replace ruby (gemstone) with red gem, etc., then yes, someone "needs" to clean up the gemstone tags. They won't clean themselves.

These aliases and implications should be doable without clean up.

as the creator of the original gemstone thread i should probably weigh in on this
i like the color_gemstone tags since most people will just tag anything red as ruby, blue as sapphire, etc
i didnt make the changes when that thread happened because i was still new to the site

yes, they are just a really simplified drawing of gems, for another example see some of the drawings under legend of zelda's rupee
amber's status as a gem may not be mineralogical but it is in common language

Of a sample of 400 posts under the sapphire_(gemstone) tag, I found just over 7% were better labelled a different color than blue, with the majority of those posts being an aqua color. Although many of those posts were by the same few uploaders, which might suggest that they were either unaware of the turquoise_(gemstone) tag or from their perspective it was blue color.
As a comparison, looking at a sample of 200 posts from the blue hair tag. I found that over 17% of those posts would probably be better labelled as a different color, most of those posts leaning toward a purple color. Given the subjectivity of color determination by people, it'll not be avoidable having similar colors be tagged as each other though. Some for example tag hair color based on canon color tagging, even if the character has a color that is closer to another color or the depicted lighting has changed the color their hair in the image.
As for the composition of the gemstone, there is no way to tell the actual composition of them unless someone states it, but that is either something not particularly necessarily being tagged or could be resolved with something like a corundum_(mineral) tag if it ever was actually needed.
