Makes very little sense since :d is a shape; it shouldn't matter if there is a grin ("closed teeth") or not.

I would prefer to keep :d and grin mutually exclusive per-expression. I agree with Guaro's stance in the topic linked above, that :d should represent an open mouth as well and not just the shape of the mouth. I don't think removing this implication makes gardening any easier, either.

The tag's called ":D", people are going to use it for mouths shaped like "D". Any other conclusion is wishful thinking.

I don't see why post #4765660 can't be tagged :D, that's literally the shape of the mouth.
