Any sort of upward curve - ^_^ + :D (e.g. post #4004652, slight but noticeable so it's an appropriate threshold)
Straight line eyes - =_= + :D (e.g. post #4597032)
Any sort of downward curve - U_U + :D (e.g. post #3887278)

I really disagree with this. post #4004652's eyes are almost completely horizontal, there's almost no curvature in there.

This is why these tags are useless and deserve to be nuked. Everyone has their own definition and the tags end up being a mix of completely different concepts.

Out of all the posts I tagged ^_^ on, I purposely chose the one with the least curvature (that I bothered examining) to offer my viewpoint on the border between ^_^ and =_=. Unless we want to create a new tag to separate pointy peaked closed eyes and anything with a subtle upcurve (just closed eyes might be fine too), I'm fine tagging the latter with ^_^. Otherwise there are almost 60k posts to garden.

It's not a matter of threshold, those tags are supposed to be for the classic exaggerated eye styles found in anime. Most posts should not have those tags.
The expression has to reflect the emote. It's ^_^, not "upturned closed eyes". Otherwise it becomes padding because the only thing putting the posts together is a slight upturned bent of closed eyes, which is pretty much every single post where a character is smiling with closed eyes, and anyone trying to search for actual arrow shaped eyes will not be able to.

The wiki really badly explains this, and assumes everyone understands the meaning and nuisance of "iconic", but then again nobody reads wikis, which is why these tags are a lost cause.

Personally I think ^_^ should only be used when the eyes are visibly drawn as upwards pointing chevrons (i.e. upside down v's).

Anything with slight amounts of curvature can go into =_= so long as they still retain the thick horizontal(ish) bar shape. If one isn't sure, or if the eyes are drawn in some kind of weird "in-between" state, then none of the emoticon face tags should be used.
