Japanese Suffixes (tachi)

These are all over the map in standardization.

This issue recently caused trouble in which I spent several minutes searching for the correct tag name for a series, because I've always experienced tachi being hyphenated, and so I almost created a new tag name. I only discovered the correct tag after finding the matching character tag.

I don't really care which way we go with this, but it would be nice to be standardized.

Edit:
  • (2021-06-07)
    • Updated the tag counts
      • One word: 28 -> 25
      • Underscore: 8 -> 5
      • Hypen: 78 -> 55
    • If I wasn't sure, I left it out.

I'd vote "-tachi".

Edit: Only if it's 「達」 used as a pluralizing suffix. The one for ningyou_kenshi_wa_tachi_kirenai is a 「断ち」.

Anyhow, this helps make it clear that "-tachi" is a suffix attached to the preceding word, and not an independent word on its own (which may be other words with the same pronunciation). It also makes clear that the preceding word itself is an independent word by itself, and helps improve legibility in the case of long words.

I also think that the hyphenated form is more common elsewhere, though I am currently unable to substantiate this.

Edit2: Complication might arise in the cases of multiple chained suffixes. In those cases I generally try to group the overall word into two parts with just one hyphen in the middle, as multiple hyphens might hurt legibility. Though, 「達」as a suffix is almost always the rightmost one, with 「達ら」being one notable exception. For that I just join them together and use "-tachira".

I am not sure what the general practice is for the above case though, and I can't find any examples on Danbooru yet.

Yeah, unfortunately, it's not possible to eliminate such using either regexes or wildcard. I wasn't counting those when tallying up those I found. I may not have been as thorough with the underscore version, as I hadn't considered the tachi sword or it being someone's name. I'll go back and look through the matches again and update the OP.
