Doujin Pre-Approval System

Posted under General

What if there was some way to submit the link to a doujin you want to upload so approvers could approve or deny it as a batch? Alternatively, a pinned thread where you just link the doujin and approvers can check the thread and respond if they'll watch for your upload to make sure the doujin gets approved.

It makes sense in theory, but realistically it'd just end up being a thread where people beg for approvals and are ignored by approvers.

You might have better luck asking for this kind of feedback on discord.

Man I hate joining discords

I feel you, but think about it: if we make a thread we either only allow approvers to post feedback (which will make it dead on arrival), or it'll end up causing a lot of butthurt as random users will drop in to say "looks fine to me" and we'll have to deal with people getting mad that their 20 upload slot commitment was rejected.

Yeah, but I figure the deletion feedback thread runs the same risk

In theory, this could speed up verification for some users. In reality, you will have to check the work selectively, which violates the order of checking all the pictures. Moreover, it is not a fact that pressing one approval button (read forum, open posts, check, close, approve) will be faster than pressing a hotkey when checking.

An improvement can be made for pools in that moderators will be able to filter by approval status in a specific pool, rather than search for posts by color. Perhaps such a script already exists or it can be created.

Arguably much easier than joining an IRC channel/server, like old times.

Except now your phone number is also linked.

Well, in theory it should all be anonymous, and nothing should really come out of it so long as everything one does is above board... but some people are still a bit uncomfortable with their phone number being linked to something that other people also use for porn. Especially if one is living in a country with a trigger-happy censorship board. One data leak or doxx, and then... well.

(And yes, discords don't necessarily require a verified phone number, but Discord has a tendency to ban accounts that don't have a linked phone number.)

Though, hmm... maybe I should get a separate SIM card for this. Discord allows multiple accounts in its ToS, right?

Edit: Anyhow, on the subject of this forum topic in particular, I'd agree that it wouldn't be necessary. Current mod queue system is working mostly fine.

The fact that you have to sign up alone makes it worse than IRC, which you can just join via a web client without requiring an account.

FYI I've never used a phone number with discord and I've never had an issue in 4 years. That kind of restriction is server-based, but the danbooru discord has no restrictions to who can join.

Your best bet is asking in topic #7934 (the upload feedback thread) or on Discord, as mentioned. "Is this uppable?" is a common question on Discord. The reason Discord is recommended is because it's easier to get a quick answer to quick question in a chat environment than a forum environment.

The reason doujins have hard time getting approved is because it's hard to tell whether something is any good when the text is untranslated and the artwork is unremarkable. A pre-approval system would have the same issue. "Is this doujin approvable?" "I don't know, I can't read it and the artwork is boring, so that's a pass from me, but maybe someone else would approve it?". Then they don't, and you get screwed.

Danbooru isn't really designed for doujins in general. There are other sites for that. The upload limit exists in part to keep people from doing things like flooding the front page and searches with "meh" quality doujins.

For the record, the Danbooru Discord doesn't require any account verification, email or phone. We sometimes raise it if there are issues with spam or trolls, but I try to keep the barrier to entry as low as possible for these reasons.

The Discord server exists because in this day and age, there are a lot of people more comfortable with hopping on a Discord server, which requires no work because they already have a Discord account, than signing up for an old fashioned web forum. Yes, forums are old fashioned these days. Most Danbooru users don't even have a Danbooru account. Only about 10% of active users do. So for some users, joining a Discord is easier than joining a forum.

To clarify, Discord used to work fine for me, but currently whatever system they use to detect bots hate my ISP (3rd world country), it seems. Even when I'm doing nothing suspicious without blocking any trackers and cookies. And seems like once an account is 'flagged' for whatever reason, it's flagged permanently and will auto-block the moment one takes off the phone number.

So, sigh, I guess this is one of the "casualties of AI-powered services" thingy, I guess. Some people get shafted more and have to share more personal data to access those services. Effectively, for me currently, joining any discord requires my phone number.

Updated

I definitely get what OP's saying, early on in my uploading I had a couple sets of images go unapproved and then became highly reluctant to upload more than 1 or 2 related images at a time. Then I'd usually never bother to go back to upload the rest even if the initial upload was approved and eventually someone else might do it. Doujins then are even worse since a single page has way less value on its own than one image of a variant set, I've never even tried uploading them.

This is why I never liked to upload any kind of comic where the dialogue was central to appreciating it unless I was willing to translate it myself
