Not necessarily. That's one form that's been used, and one I considered. The downside of the "username" is that it's really just a "display name" and can and often is changed, sometimes frequently. He'll be aerodog as long as he has the same account. He might not be inu half an hour from now.
Either would have been acceptable, though.
Fair enough. It concerns me just a little that there's no consistent rule for this, but with the artist lookup feature maybe that's not much of an issue. If both are just as acceptable, I'll just go with whatever looks better on a case-by-case basis...
Moving off on a little tangent, what do I do about post #440075? It originally had no artist tag; the artist's name (shima) is way too common, but the filename is just 4327558. I made it shima_(4327558) anyway, for lack of any better idea, but I don't like it.

There never was. Just guidelines. The idea is to get something reasonably accurate, unique, and user friendly (hence no kanji tags, non-standard characters, or pixiv#####). Artists are often not very clear about what they want to be called, and they obviously don't take name conflicts into account when they do name themselves, so we just try to use common sense.

I noticed that one in the new tags list. There really is no good answer, is there? No homepage, way too common display name, crappy account name. shima_(pixiv) is available though. No, he's not the only shima on pixiv, but given the complete lack of anything else reasonable, I'd suggest going with shima_(pixiv) anyway.
