Kemono Friends Virtual Youtubers - new characters or new costumes?

Posted under General

Recently, the Kemono Friends franchise debuted their first official v-tuber pair, Humboldt_penguin_(kemono_friends) and African_penguin_(kemono_friends). These are standard KF characters, but as v-tubers they wear different outfits (most notably, their long-sleeved sweaters have been exchanged for long mittens and sleeveless sweaters). The question is, since they have different outfits and serve different roles in the franchise, are they different characters for the purposes of tagging?

In post #4489566, I've added the virtual_youtuber tag, but kept the character tag the same, and just added official_alternate_costume, is this the right tagging?

Thanks.

PS: If/When the character issue is sorted out, I'll add them to the list of v-tubers unless someone does it first.

Yeah, that seems appropriate enough. We have similar instances of VTubers derived from actual characters, with examples in the form of Katsura Kotonoha from School Days, and a full-blown VTuber project for Sister Princess. In the former case, only really one post was uploaded, strictly due to the graphical glitches her model had, so only Virtual YouTuber was added. In the latter case, the designs are in effect one-to-one, so to further distinguish the posts a new copyright tag was created for that specific project.

As an additional example meanwhile, Kaminari Ai of Yatterman, when she became a VTuber, appeared to have received a new design, which someone had decided warranted a brand new character tag (the same would later happen with Boyakki, but he doesn't have a post on Danbooru, so).

I'd say that as long as it isn't a complete design revamp, the tagging here is fine.
