reference_photo_inset -> reference_photo

Posted under Tags

-1 reference_photo is a meta tag because it is based on information outside the image, whereas reference_photo_inset is general because it is a part of the image itself. Since it is clear from the image itself what the relationship between the 2 images are, there is no data present outside the image which is what reference_photo implies.

In fact, thinking about the logic behind it, a general tag should never imply a meta tag. That seems to be the general case, with one exception that I'm not quite sure I understand (tag implications).

But at the end of the day a picture tagged with reference photo inset has a reference photo in it. See also the difference in post counts between reference_photo_inset reference_photo and reference_photo_inset -reference_photo.
People often don't even bother to make a distinction.

I agree that it should be fine in this case for a general tag to imply a meta tag, however reference_photo_inset does not necessarily have a photo in it, see below considerations:

I think the implication approaches a good idea, however some things may need redefinition or even new tags. With the request as it stands, many images which do not have a reference_photo, would receive the reference_photo tag, including inset graphics that are screenshots from anime and games or other illustrations, such as with post #4038557, post #3920250, post #3304675, post #3515319 post #3256045, post #3079579, post #3898226 (A photo of a graphic) post #4034439.

And under reference_work, we can find graphical insets not tagged with reference photo inset, such as post #3964523, post #3743979, post #1896652, post #1991737, post #1556130.

I can't really discern much of a difference between reference work and reference photo in their actual usage, except that graphical references are never tagged as reference photo, while reference photo is sometimes tagged with reference work as well. The wiki of reference work says that "An image used as a reference in the creation of a derivative work. This includes reference photos" which would seem to suggest that reference_photo should also be tagged with reference_work necessarily, which isn't even nearly reflected in usage:

Post count for reference_work reference_photo: 57
Post count for -reference_work reference_photo: 148

So I have a few different potential solutions

1. • Rename reference_photo_inset to something like reference_work_insert, graphical_insert, or source_material_inset, allowing the tag to be encompassing of *all* different types of insets, be they CGI, a photograph, an anime or game screenshot, or another illustration.

• Imply re-named reference_work_inset tag to reference_work

2 • Keep reference photo inset, while creating a new graphical_inset tag for all non-photo reference insets

• Imply reference photo inset to reference photo as in the original request

• Imply the new graphical_inset tag to reference work

Of these two, I really would prefer the first one. I think it would be better the change the name of the inset tag to be more encompassing rather than arbitrarily maintaining another to keep photos and CGI/illustration insets separate.

And then there are a few more issues. Are images which are photo-referenced or have a reference photo inset not necessarily also a derivative work?

In looking through all this, I also found that plagiarism is aliased to derivative work. I think this should only be an implication, because a tag cataloging actual art fraud has its uses; instead, it's difficult to keep track of such images consistently. This alias was created long ago in the Danbooru pioneer days, but with a much longer catalog today, I think we can see why we should reverse that early decision.

So regardless of the above solutions to the reference inset issue, I also suggest that we

• Imply reference photo to reference work

• Imply photo-referenced and reference photo inset (or renamed/new tag) to derivative_work

• Unalias plagiarism to derivative work
