Are these color sports bra tags necessary? Seems like you'd get the same results using a <color>_bra +sports_bra search (ex: blue_bra sports_bra).

Then sports bra should implicate bra.

The alternative would be needing to clean up the <color>_bra tags and the sports_bra bra search for separation if we're maintaining a separation between bra and sports bra. That's not necessarily unreasonable, since a sports bra can also be outer wear and as long as bra implicates underwear it's not really accurate with sports bra.

I'll retract my previous post, since thinking about it now they should remain separate.

Is it a bad thing for underwear which may be worn as outerwear to be tagged as underwear? What would make sense to me is allowing sports_bra to imply bra, but also to imply sports_bra and other sport or outdoor appropriate wearing of underwear to a new outerwear tag. It's silly not to use the existing color_bra tags to tag sports bras which are just a category of underwear which may appropriately been worn outside

sports_bra shouldn't implicate bra - I don't think users searching for underwear want posts featuring sportswear showing up in that search.

Agreed. Burumas are another hybrid under/outerwear garment and they get tagged with their own color_buruma tags, so I don't see a problem with doing the same for color_sports_bra.

These are really too small to implicate, since even the biggest one only has ~200 posts (out of 7k sports bra posts) and most of the rest have <20 posts, but whatever.

Make a separate request if you want to advocate merging these into bra colors instead.
