create alias berry, berries -> fruit

create alias berry -> fruit
create alias berries -> fruit

Some berries like strawberry, blueberry, etc. already imply fruit. (they don't imply berry or berries)

I think just fruit is OK... We don't need berry or berries, in my opinion.

The wiki of tag berry says it's ambiguous and that fruit should be used instead.

EDIT: The bulk update request #2814 (forum #167678) has been rejected by @evazion.

I don't think replacing an ambiguous tag with an even more ambiguous tag solves a problem. If anything, it just makes things worse. Berries often aren't drawn in enough detail (post #3607732) to positively identify them as anything more specific than "berries", but they're still obviously berries, and simply tagging them as "fruit" would result in a loss of useful information. We might as well get rid of other ambiguous food tags like meat and sweets.

In this case, can't we use fruit request and wait for the proper fruit / berry tag? Like apple or strawberry or some other more obscure kind of berry.

The last thing we need is yet another *_request meta tag that sits around forever without getting fulfilled. Especially since, once again, it's often impossible for anyone to come up with a more specific tag.

(BTW, apples aren't berries)

If we really need a tag for berries, shouldn't it be just berry instead of berries? Should berry imply fruit? Should strawberry, blueberry, etc. stop implying fruit and imply berry?

OK, but I didn't say that apples are berries.

I don't think it makes a huge difference which tag to use, but in most cases there are many berries, not just one. Usually the plural tag is favored for objects that generally appear in multiples, like socks or petals.

There are many images with a single strawberry for instance... post #3934838, post #3934825, post #3924940, post #3891261, post #3891263...

So in these cases I don't think berries works well. Maybe they could be tagged berry. And berries could be aliased to berry.

socks is not a good comparison because the mere existence of one sock implies that another one also exists, since they are created in pairs - meanwhile not all berries grow in groups. I will concede that we use petals instead of petal, but on the other hand we also use leaf and bubble instead of leaves and bubbles.

It seems to me that we use both plural and singular terms; there isn't exactly much consistency. That being said, it makes more sense from a grammatical point of view to use the singular terms - it would be correct to say that there is a berry in an image with ten berries, but it would be incorrect to say that there are berries in an image with one berry.

I think it's all about natural pairs and natural sets. Both socks and petals are created as part of a set and normally seen in one. Berries might grow in bunches, or they might grow on their own. Many might be eaten together, or they might be enjoyed in isolation. I don't think they form a natural set, so the singular makes more sense here.
