Pokémon: About removing <species> tags from all alolan_<species> and galarian_<species>

Posted under Tags

Please let me know if you would like to do this:

1- If a post contains an Alolan Pokémon, use only alolan_<species> tag, not <species>
Example: Alolan Meowth would be tagged alolan_meowth, never meowth

2- If a post contains a Galarian Pokémon, use only galarian_<species> tag, not <species>
Example: Galarian Meowth would be tagged galarian_meowth, never meowth

I can't speak for anyone, but apparently at least @AngryZapdos wants this?

This is not my idea so I won't defend it. Personally, I don't like this idea. But from recent discussions on the forum and Discord, it seems that maybe other people would like to do it this way. Maybe they can explain/defend it better than I can, if needed.

To be fair, I can see at least one good thing about doing it this way: It's better to have some sort of consistent tagging rule than the current mess.

Updated

I fully support this. This approach allows one to search for posts featuring both Alolan/Galarian Pokémon and their OG counterparts without the need of unnecessary composite tags. Additionally, one would still be able to use OR searching to search for every variant of these Pokémon if they so desired (for example, ~meowth ~alolan_meowth ~galarian_meowth).

This is the method that enables the most options for searching while contributing the least amount of tag bloat.

Fair enough. From what has been discussed on the forum and Discord, I guess you would also like this:

(correct me if I'm wrong)

1- If a post contains an Alolan Pokémon, use gen_7_pokemon
Example: Alolan Meowth would be tagged gen_7_pokemon (never gen_1_pokemon)

2- If a post contains a Galarian Pokémon, use gen_8_pokemon
Example: Galarian Meowth would be tagged gen_8_pokemon (never gen_1_pokemon)
Example: Galarian Zigzagoon would be tagged gen_8_pokemon (never gen_3_pokemon)

Yes, you are correct. If we adopt this method of using Pokémon species' character tags, then this is the way of using the gen_x_pokemon tags that makes the most sense.

I'm going to edit the Pokémon posts based on these tagging rules then, if it's alright. I'll do that later.

For instance, I edited these posts:

I plan to do this to all Pokémon posts.

This looks like a consistent tagging rule, which is a good thing in my opinion. I understand there are people who prefer it this way. (both in the forum and Discord)

That said, if it were up to me, I would have done as I said in topic #16538, which is a completely different idea that seems to be more accurate to how the Pokémon species are actually treated in the game dialogue. But I'll do as the majority seems to prefer in this case.

OK, it should all be done now.

1- Added gen_7_pokemon to all Alolan forms.
2- Added gen_8_pokemon to all Galarian forms .
3- Removed previous generation tags from both (like removing gen_1_pokemon from Alolan Meowth).
4- Removed normal species tags (like removing meowth tag from all instances of Alolan Meowth).
