I don't see "my~zhime" anywhere on the site, except in the URL, which means nothing. Could you link to something more specific? Z != 乙, just in case you were thinking that.

"z" is used as a substitute for the "乙" in situations where it can't be used, and is used as such officially, and consistently.

I guess we could implicate it to "My~乙HiME", but...thats not our policy, as a rule.

And regardless, the "mai" is wrong, none of the series are ever romanized that way in official work.

Here are the constituents:

• 舞 = mai ("dancing" / a character's name) & sounds like "my" (first person posessive)— it's a pun
• 乙女 = otome ("young girl")
• HiME = hime ("princess" / also a forced acronym / a carry-over from the last series)
• 乙HiME = otome (a nonce blend of the above two)

You are right that 乙 is also treated like a Z due to visual similarity (Especially where it is used as a shared character in 舞-乙HiME Zwei's logo).

So basically it's about 15 things loaded into one phrase. I doubt there is any one way to romanize it in that case, but I believe Danbooru policy is to ignore made-up official romanizations when actual Japanese is involved, and the title is unambiguously pronounced mai_otome. For that reason I'm against anything else as the official tag, though I wouldn't care if my-zhime was aliased to mai_otome.

I'm not sure why you think a tilde is better than a hyphen given the official materials also use a hyphen.

There's also the word 乙姫 (otohime) meaning "youngest princess", but I don't know if that plays into the name at all, since I haven't watched the show. I tend to agree with Shinjidude here, though.

You must be new here. We romanize Japanese according to uniform rules and generally ignore novelty romanizations. "my~zhime", in particular, is so retarded that we would ignore it even if we otherwise had a rule of following official spellings. Wherever we might chose to draw the line, "my~zhime" would be on the other side of it. On the wrong side. With you.

Like I said, I honestly don't care as long as we get aliases in, it took me four fucking tries to figure out what the tag was.

But you should've learnt enough by now to know that the proper way to propose aliases is correct_name -> official_name, not the other way around. Thus you deserve the flak you got from LaC.

I don't think mai_otome is "correct", as Shinjidude demonstrated, there is no "correct" rendition using the roman alphabet.

If my-zhime isn't acceptable, then I think my-otome is the closest to being correct.

Ironically, the names we currently use "mai_hime" and "mai_otome" are the least legitimate English spellings of the titles.

From day one the official English spelling of Hime was "My Hime" (as seen in the promo from before the show aired, official website, virtually every official product in existence). You will never find "Mai Hime" anywhere except fan translations (and one artbook by Hirokazu Hisayuki) so there's no ambiguity worth considering. I think my_hime should be primary spelling with mai_hime pointing to it.

Otome I guess is a little trickier. The official Japanese website does use my-zhime, but all other Japanese material (soundtracks, etc) uses My Otome. The English dvd release on the other hand uses *both* with My Z Hime as the primary title and My Otome as a secondary sub-title. Strange. I that case I would probably think my_otome would be best as primary spelling for consistencies sake.

I don't mind creating these then:

This is exactly what I was going to suggest, and it's how I've always referred to them.

"my" is the official romanization (and fits with one of the many layers in the pun) both on the official website URL and on the R1 DVD release. I go with "otome" because if you look at the official title, there's... reversefurikana? (it's like furigana, but katakana, and below instead of above =P) マイオトメ written out as a pronunciation guide.

I'm still for using "Mai", being that that part of the title is in kanji and has Japanese meaning. If it were in katakana instead, I'd agree and say romanize it like English.

Also a quick informal google survey finds 1,170,000 citations of "mai-otome", surprisingly (to me) 466,000 citations of "my-zhime", and only 151,000 citations for "my-otome". "Mai-Otome" is the clear winner in terms of actual usage by at least a factor of two.

I understand this, but it's not the official name, and in this case we can't write "my" off as "Japan failing at romanization".

"Mai" of course wins on google because thats how it was fansubbed all along, and because it's not technically "wrong". Of course few things can be called "wrong" with this franchise's titles, since they work on so many levels.

At least we don't have to worry about capitalization.
