I just noticed that toosaka_rin has been aliased to tohsaka_rin. I'm almost certain this used to be the other way around, but I can't find any mention on the forum of a switch being made. What's the deal?

Awesome.
You should probably fix the kaleido_ruby implication too then, as it shows up with rin twice for all the ruby images.
No, I am Spartacus.
Regardless of whether it was a good idea or not, it wasn't very cool to revert it without any discussion considering how many posts it has. The issues with kaleido_ruby are a good reason why discussion is needed.
I'll let it stand since about 99% of everyone here seems to prefer it.
WTF? We have discussed it. Then discussed it again. Then discussed it again wrt. this very tag and agreed on toosaka_rin. Then we had like 9000 other threads discussing this issue AND DECIDED TO STICK TO OO. And now you revert it out of the blue, without any discussion whatsoever? Could you please explain why the fuck do you bother having mods, janitors and all the community process to keep shit consistent if you don't give a flying fuck about it? And why do you pretend you do? I spend a metrick fucktonne of time on this site, investing my time in energy in keeping it up to some standards we agree upon. Could you please not fuck with that?
I was under the impression that all "official" sources (Type-Moon @ http://www.typemoon.com/fate/chara/image/rin02.gif, the english release DVD credits) used Tohsaka, which makes it correct as far as the english-speaking crowd is concerned.
I see no logical reason to worry about the "correct" romanization of something that has an official english name, no matter how unappetizing or inconsistent it may appear. Because this is an english-language site, and it's just confusing to the people who DON'T know or understand the characters, and who are used to particular names.
NOTE: Opinion does not apply to translations, obviously.
NOTE 2: "Toosaka" sounds really retarded even if you are right.
I meant to post a thread about this, since it seems like there isn't a good standard for translating names with kanji vs using what made up readings the writer invented.
But in this case consistency with mirrormoon and the original's own website seems more important to me than anything, and it was clearly never seriously implemented.
葉月, why didn't you change the other 15 names with 遠/藤 in them (*toh*)? I really don't think any Tsukihime fans would appreciate it but it would have been more consistent. I think anything is OK as long as it's done everywhere...
toosaka isn't as bad as tomusooya.
This is one of those cases where the descriptivists outweigh the prescriptivists. Type Moon uses Tohsaka. TakaJun and gp32 both used Tohsaka in their translations of the game. As far as I know, the subs for the official anime DVDs and all the fansubs used Tohsaka. Based on a Google search, the only people who seem to use Toosaka are the ones who have no idea what the game is.
"They're all wrong!" you say.
Maybe they are. The fact that oo is used in several tags already is another legitimate counterargument. But what's been done has been done and I'm not really in the mood to revert it based on a whim that goes against the current "use whatever the copyright owners use" rule.
So Hazuki, I will give you an offer.
There's no point in half-assing this. Give me a list of every *oh* tag we need to fix. I will need to have other JP speakers verify every one.
You also need to give me an all encompassing list of romanization rules. Saying "Hepburn" isn't enough; Hepburn has a dozen variants. If the majority of Danbooru signs off on it, then I will revert tohsaka_rin back to toosaka_rin. The rivers will run red with blood of Toono Akiha fanboys committing suicide. The aspirations of the Oono Kanako legions will be crushed. But you will have your way.
It's up to you.
::shrugs:: I wouldn't mind toosaka, and we *did* decide on it before, so memento could have at least asked first. That said, I am okay going with 'oh' as an exception when it's universally known as the spelling for that character.
However, for characters that aren't so well established, or for artists and the like, where there is no preexisting inclination to favor one or the other, I'd rather stick with 'oo' for おお.
I don't much like the 'oh' generally, but for a character like Rin, I'm not going to worry about it, honestly.
I don't think I've expressed an opinion on this before. But I'm very much in favor of the "oh" romanization of "おお". It's consistent (with a common scheme), in popular use, and avoids the issue where "oo" is typically pronounced "u" in english rather than "o:".
Not to mention azumanga_daioo looks absolutely retarded.
