Replacing "Bowsette" with less erroneous nomenclature

Posted under General

The thing that bugs me about getting rid of genderswap from these characters are the cases where the actual gender switch is portrayed in the image.

and if you keep it for those cases then it makes sense to keep it for everything, right?

I'm not sure a clear rule can be made to be applied in 100% of the cases. For example what about shimakaze-kun? Should the tag just be removed, given that there's absolutely no design difference between the two versions save for the fact that one is male? The only use of the tag is basically to associate it to translated tags to be able to tell when the character being depicted has a penis.

The main problem of keeping enstablished, significantly unique "genderswaps" into the genderswap tag imo is that when people search for genderswap they're searching for characters being evidently genderswapped. If a character has a significantly different design than the original, then it's not really something people would expect to see. This is even more true for personifications or humanizations of very unhuman-like characters, such as for bowser and king boo. I realize however this is kind of a weak reasoning for ranma and similar.

We're going to treat canon and non-canon genderswaps the same way?

I believe the main distinction will be between genderswaps which are frequent enough (and/or memorable enough) to have their own chartag, and those which are not. The biggest concern for tag design is whether the user can find what they are looking for. Canonicity is more of a side note that affects chartag suffixes and wikis.

In fact, I would suggest we add Variations (genderswap) to the wiki of each base chartag affected by this change. That way any genderswap can be found by either reading the wiki of the basechar or searching basechar+genderswap.

Honestly I feel like it's a stretch to call this a genderswap to begin with. This isn't just a male character turning female. It's one character magically taking on the traits of an entirely different character. If anything I'd consider it closer to transformation or maybe fusion than to genderswap.

On another note, I want to bring up the borrowed design tag. I don't think spamming this tag on every Bowsette post is useful now that the meme has taken on a life of its own.

I think we should leave the character tag the same. It's a fan-made character. You can't call "erroneous nomenclature" on a fan-made character that the creator never gave a name. Any name is just as valid as the next. We could call it "Bob" and it'd be just as "correct". It's about usability. Bowsette does a pretty good job of getting the point across that it's a female, humanized version of Bowser. "Peacher" and "Peachser" sound more like typos than a female, humanized Bowser.

Also, the genderswap tag does not apply to this character. It's a complete change of form. Transformation is probably more applicable.

Also, this is not a search that can simply be turned into a two-tag search. It's a character of its own. That'd be like saying that female_admiral_(kantai_collection) should be changed to admiral_(kantai_collection) genderswap.

Lastly, +1 to what evazion said about not using borrowed design on these posts, especially since it's much more than just a fan-designed alternate costume.

Just a quick question: in Wiki (bowsette), it says "Since this is genderswap and not cosplay, Princess Peach or Bowser should not be tagged unless they are present in their normal form".

But from what I can see, lots of bowsette images are tagged with Bowser despite there is no "normal form" Bowser. Should I remove "bowser" tag from them?

imo Bowsette should only be tagged with genderswap/genderswap_(mtf) and transformation if Bowser is shown to be transforming into Bowsette. I'd suggest using fusion instead - it's not just "Bowser's a girl now", it's "Bowser and Peach smooshed into one character".

If you see a Bowsette image where Bowser or Peach are not present then yes, you should remove their tags from the post. That reminds me, if we do decide to use fusion then someone should update the wiki.

Well seems it's official now, Bowsette's the fastest growing character tag ever on danbooru. The second contender is a hundred or so posts behind in its top day. Really gives a new meaning to "So Long, Gay Bowser".

Really? I was pretty sure Kashima or 2B had a higher rate.

mass update bowsette genderswap genderswap_(mtf) -> bowsette
mass update princess_king_boo genderswap genderswap_(mtf) -> princess_king_boo

Prepping cleanup procedure for the two prominent tags in question.

There may be some collateral with some minor instances of others wearing the Super Crown getting the genderswap tags deleted, such as bowser_jr. and mario, but they can be easily fixed (for now).
