What's the difference between the two? We already have robot arms aliased to their mechanical counterpart, shouldn't we do the same here?

They're not a subset; they're a synonym. This should be an alias.

Most mechanical ears seem to be robotic animal ears. Should we have a tag for pointy protruding robot ears?

I was unsure initially if it should be an alias or implication, although now I’m leaning more towards aliasing myself.

there's no reason to have both tags since they're used in pretty much the same form.
And if we're to lose one it's definitely the robot ears one, as mechanical ears is more encompassing and, in line with all the other mechanical* appendages tags.
