Are these two too similar of a concept where it would be pointless to have two separate tags? Onomatopoeia occurs "when a sound effect is written or spoken out", and sound_effects are "sounds other than speech or music made artificially for use in a play, movie, or other broadcast production". Both tags are generally used for any text in an image that gives a sound a certain word.

Now that video with sound is a thing here, actual sound effects can be tagged now and be distinct from onomatopoeia unless it's ubiquitous in all the videos on this site.
