Tag Implication: CD / DVD cover -> cover

Posted under General

Implicating cd_cover, dvd_cover to cover.

Reason: Subsumption, all cd/dvd covers are also covers. This could be aliased instead, but doing so would lose some information. That is unless we want to keep book/doujin covers seperate, but that's not exactly how things are going right now, since I've seen cd/dvd covers with only the cover tag.

Well, if they were tagged according to how they're defined in their wiki pages now (though cd_cover needs one), I'd personally prefer they be kept separate. But that only works if people read the wiki when tagging...

Ok, I've at least moved the cd covers I could find in "cover" to "cd_cover" for now. That way we can keep things seperate if we want. DVD covers look more similar to books from the thumbnails, so I might have missed them if there were any in "cover".

If we decide to implicate / alias later, the mixing will be automatic, but at least for now we can treat "cover" as just books / doujinshi.

If we had cover_page as a new tag, and implicated it, cd_cover, and dvd_cover to cover, we could easily isolate people adding new tags to just cover with a "cover -cd_cover -dvd_cover -cover_page" query and set things straight.

I was aboout to go ahead and make the suggested changes but I just realized there are some game box covers (real or mockup) in the cover tag too. Like post #352697 and post #110636.

Far as I can tell here are the tags in question we want to consolidate, with the tags we want to keep in bold:

back_cover (5)
cd_cover (54)
cover (1350)
cover_art (12)
cover_page (0)
dvd_cover (170)
front_cover (3)
game_cover (8)
magazine_cover (8)
mangacover (1)
ost_cover (1)
psp_cover (1)

- cover_art, 12 images, retagged, mostly cd_covers. There were two laserdisc covers (post #26853, post #26852) that, at the risk of enraging technophiles, I've tagged with dvd_cover for now. Because I am so not creating a laserdisc_cover tag for 2 images, and let's not get bogged down in the semantics for now.
- ost_cover, 1 image, retagged cd_cover.
- psp_cover, 1 image, retagged game_cover.
- front_cover, 3 images, retagged cover_page.
- mangacover, 1 image, retagged cover_page.

Discussion:
- magazine_cover, worth keeping separate as another category? I want to try to keep categories to a minimum and if there aren't a lot more of these than the 8 currently tagged, I'll move them to cover_page
- back_cover, is it needed at all? Only 5 images. Suggest removing or just using cover_page.

The changes above bring us to the current situation:

cover (1349)
- cd_cover (57)
- dvd_cover (172)
- game_cover (10)
- cover_page (4) [to be expanded from cover above eventually]

? back_cover (5)
? magazine_cover (8)

So the small straggler tags are mostly taken care of, leaving the main ones and two question marks. Comments on where to go from here?

Nuke back_cover I can't imagine any time where it would be useful as these are almost all images in a pool.

Flesh out magazine_cover I saw at least a dozen more just flipping through cover real quick.

Okay. I'm probably going to go ahead as planned some time tomorrow if nobody else comments before then. To recap, that means remove back_cover, keep and expand magazine_cover, isolate 'cover' from the other cover types we're keeping, mass edit cover to cover_page, then go back and implicate them all to cover. Hopefully that doesn't sound as confusing as I think it does, because it makes sense in my mind at least. =P

Oh I kind of forgot about this. Will make the changes now.

wanchan said: Added some more to the magazine_cover tag. I think magazine itself needs defining - it currently seems to contain images that have magazines in them and also scans from magazines (and formerly a few magazine covers until I retagged them).

Magazine should refer to magazines in the image. Scans from Megami and the like (i.e. the stuff you'd see on moe.imouto) should go under scan presumably.

Alright, done. Here's the current setup. We have five types of covers we tag at danbooru:
dvd_cover - Covers to home video releases. 99% of these will be DVDs.
cd_cover - Covers to CD releases, primarily OSTs and singles.
magazine_cover - Covers to print magazines, such as Megami.
game_cover - Covers to game boxes, for PC or console games.
cover_page - Most of the rest, i.e. anything print media that isn't a magazine. Primarily doujin covers around here.

All of the above are applicable to both real covers and fake/mock-up covers.

All implicate to plain cover. If you find one that just REALLY doesn't fit any of the above (somehow), just tag it plain cover.
