Does fire_emblem need to implicate nintendo?

Posted under Tags

After looking around on the fire_emblem tag, I've noticed that the nintendo tag has been sprinkled around inconsistently. The vast majority of fire_emblem posts don't have this tag, but pertaining to fire_emblem-only posts (no other copyrights), the nintendo tag exists mostly among the two newest installments in the series.

This could also be extended to other Nintendo copyrights that have most of their posts without the tag, like animal_crossing and metroid.

The reason I ask this is because I see many fire emblem posts that were uploaded without the nintendo tag have the tag added later on by some users. I also feel like Danbooru should have an official stance on tagging the copyright vs. the video game company. I personally didn't think it was necessary to do so, since I always felt that Fire Emblem established its own presence without the overall Nintendo umbrella, with the exception of the Super Smash Bros. series.

I agree, I don't think we should add Nintendo to otherwise standalone posts just because that copyright is owned by Nintendo. From a bit of checking it seems most recent uses are user #454377 adding the tag to any copyright associated with Nintendo. I think the tag should be used for posts that feature things related to the actual company, such as consoles or handhelds, or perhaps key figures such as Miyamoto Shigeru or Iwata Satoru. We don't tag Persona or Shin Megami Tensei with Atlas and we don't tag Overwatch with Blizzard, and I feel the same should apply to Nintendo.

The question of how the nintendo tag should be used has been discussed to death already (topic #6333, topic #10735, topic #11115). Each time, the resolution has been to limit its use to special circumstances, such as crossovers between Nintendo-owned copyrights or instances of the Nintendo logo.

I mentioned this to @TomReidem via Dmail a couple days ago and had intended to get around to cleaning up the tag later this week. It appears that they've chosen to disregard convention and continue slapping this tag on any and every post belonging to Nintendo properties. Oh well.

Well, Fire emblem is a Nintendo copyright such like Mario, Zelda, Metroid, and many else. I think the Nintendo tag should aplly to all of its copyright, the same with other copyright for example: Marvel or Dc. When you tag Batman you have to tag as well DC beacuse its a copyright of the same company, I think that the question is not if the Nintendo tag should be putted or not, is when a company name should be used. For example Type-moon, they own the fate series and tsukihime, and they are not like Nintendo that they are a two universe at their own, both series co-exist in the same universe

Not to dogpile on you, but the big copyright tags (like Nintendo, Type-Moon, DC Comics etc) are to be used for crossover or official art only.

To be fair: I don't think this policy is documented anywhere except for in scattered years old forum threads. We can't expect people to tag correctly if we don't write down our rules.

And it isn't mentioned in the wiki page of this tag, either.
So it should be added, I guess.

According to the wiki of Nintendo her on Danbooru, the Nintendo franchise are this:
-Animal Crossing (Doubutsu no Mori)
-Donkey Kong
-Fatal Frame (Project Zero)
-Fire Emblem
-F-Zero
-Ice Climber
-Kid Icarus (Hikari Shinwa)
-Kirby (Hoshi no Kirby)
-Metroid
-Mother
-Pikmin
-Pokémon (Pocket Monsters)
-Star Fox
-Super Mario Bros.
-Super Smash Bros.
-The Legend of Zelda (Zelda no Densetsu)
-WarioWare (Made in Wario)
-Xenoblade

Should we revert all of his recent post changes involving the tag nintendo, or do we need to manually go through them...?

I just looked some up of them. I'd suggest to revert all of them at once, since the resulting damage is too big.

E: I forgot we have the Tag script, lol. Well in that case I'd say we go through that mess manually. But not essentially reverting his posts, that would be to tiring, but just doing a nintendo search (since I think there are more mistagged posts).

Just did a quick check, and he's been doing this for the past two weeks, with > 3000 posts modified.

However, there is some legitimate tagging going on as well, such as copyright/character tagging, so a straightup reversion of all the posts wouldn't be recommended... just a removal of the nintendo tag.

Besides, like Provence mentioned, there are probably other posts under the Nintendo moniker that are mistagged as well....

I've a question that comes up:
Crossover between Nintendo copyrights.
What does that really mean, though?

For example a post that is tagged with both Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess. Would this fall under the nintendo tag (post #1746146)

And other crossover like Kirby with Pokémon would fall under the tag too, I think (post #2370501)
But what is with Kirby + Touhou like post #2377872
And what is with posts where a console is appearing, like in post #2306773?
And official art (post #2176943)?

Updated

+1 on using the Nintendo tag only to reference the company - its systema, and fixing the wiki to indicate that it is associated with those copyrights, but making sure to note that the tag's only used in specific situations. Otherwise, go with company_connection for things like crossovers or meme like "my body is ready" .

So, if you're tagging Satoru Iwata? Nintendo.

Mario, Luigi, or Roselina? Super_mario_brothers.

Just an idea, but should we use the company_connection tag instead for crossovers...?

That way, we could use the Nintendo tag for specific things like any of the Nintendo logos, game consoles, real world staff, etc present in the image. Basically, if it has a real world connection, then tag it with nintendo. If it's just a crossover, then use company_connection and crossover tags.

A company connection should always also be tagged with the company or imprint being referenced (it's like seiyuu connection in that regard).

Would a bulk revert do enough damage to warrant manually fixing all his tags? I don't think so, not with those examples Blue Trident brought up if they're typical of his tagging. That's practically tag vandalism.
