The wiki page for Music says to "Use this tag whenever a character is playing an instrument or singing." Thus when someone is singing or playing an instrument this tag should be used.

Also, when someone is playing an instrument there is an instrument being played.

On a side note (no pun intended) is there any purpose to the song tag? It seems to be overwhelmingly used for music videos, with a couple of sets of lyrics thrown in, both of which have their own tag that captures what is present considerably more effectively.

I'm confused about the point of this music tag. Is it intended to be nothing more than a replacement for a ~singing ~playing_instrument search? Does it serve any other purpose?

+1 to making playing instrument imply instrument, not so sure about the rest.

I thought about whether or not it truly held any purpose as well, but the way I interpreted it was as music playing/being played/being performed in the setting of the picture. So it would also include the likes of:
- Music being depicted as coming from a TV/radio etc.
- Music being depicted as playing from a music player of various sorts
- Music being depicted as coming from a source outside of the image itself

Take all these sorts of things together and I think it justifies having a tag.
