Should pictures like this be allowed?

Posted under General

Sorry if this is the wrong way to be bringing this up, but none of the other threads looked like the right place to bring up this specific issue.

Should posts like this be allowed? It's a flowchart photoshop collage using someone else's art.

I wouldn't see a problem if the artist themselves made it such as in post #476334 but when it's a third party taking someone else's art for a photoshop collage it doesn't seem to be much different in practice from a demotivator, blingee, image macro or any other photoshop meme.

Updated

I hate to say it, but it's not specifically against the rules. There are plenty of photoshop images after all that were modified, most likely, without the original artist's permission.

The closest rule that I could find was the following:

  • You will make a best faith effort to upload only high quality anime-related images.

I'd say the flagging reason is wrong.
I just read through all relevant rules but this image should definitely be flagged.
This image is really bad compressed.
From the ho to: upload page: "Images defaced by compression artifacts. Such images suffer from blockiness, smudginess (mostly JPEGs), grains or banding (mostly GIFs and PNGs)."
So, flagged. The first two aren't relevant. Maybe a moderator should contact the first two flaggers.

Not condoning the image, but where are you seeing compression artifacts?

Danbooru's basic stated mission is to be a gallery of high quality art based on either reference or style from Japan. As the rules stand, who made an image and how has nothing to do with its quality. "Third-party edits" have been discouraged because the majority either don't add anything worthwhile to the image or they're done in a very shoddy way, leaving behind editing artifacts, compressing the image, etc.

So, how I look at this picture. The art is decent, however the image itself is not really suitable for Danbooru. I wouldn't approve a "vehicle selection screen" from anything unless it had some kind of outstanding merit or was an example of art in itself; the image in question doesn't have any merit outside of including Touhou and is just a square flowchat.

This seems like the same issue as the nude filters thread from a few days ago. It all revolves around what types of third party edits we as a site are going to allow.

?
No, it is not the same. Well, at least not for this image. The art is so much compressed, it gets all pixelated and that has nothing to do with quality anymore^^. It's not really good to look at.

I'm definitely not sure that a bunch of art copied from elsewhere and then shrunk down into a flowchart really counts as high quality anime related art by any stretch of the imagination. The only relationship it had was the Touhou characters, and some of them were barely recognizable due to pixellation. Also, it didn't even have an artist - unless we can tag "Photoshop" as the creator.
