Duplicate Pictures

Posted under General

While this may seem like a complaint since the uploader is me, but someone who uploades a lot it's best to get things right so mistakes can be avoided. Since post #2104990 has been flagged for jpeg artifact and probably because it's a duplicate, what is the verdict now for pictures with said qualities?

I'm fine with the current policy of keeping the child posts if they're reasonable quality, which your image almost qualifies for at least. Just deleting them might not be the best way to go about with this problem, and can be a bit unfair when the mistake is on the artist, who then suddenly changes it so quickly.

For this I would recommend a policy that if the art is obviously artifacted upon immediate notice, a flagging is fine, but if the original artist posted it with that quality, then an allowance could be made in some situations. For your image I would say it's not unreasonable to appeal it on those grounds should it get deleted.

Actually, after opening it up on the computer (was browsing on phone), the picture was noticeably artifacted. I guess it was a false alarm that duplicates and jpeg artifacts are being flagged aggressively. I am also siding on it being deleted now but thanks for granting attention to my question.

There's a md5_mismatched tag though, so this doesn't seem like the case of the artist mistakenly upload. Did you save the sample version of the pic then upload, instead of uploading the full version from source? I'm pretty sure the policy is to delete all sample images.

The better quality version is a revision, so the most likely explanation seems that the artist originally mistakenly uploaded the jpeg artifacted version and had to replace it.

I did not save it first then upload. It's probably the artist's fault.

The official policy had been basically don't upload duplicates unless they are of notably better quality (likewise to not approve lower or same quality duplicates in the mod queue). Older duplicates get grandfathered in so as to not hurt the earlier uploader's ability to upload (as they may not have been aware of the existence of the higher quality version). IQDB and the similar image feature are your friend here, and it's generally a good idea to use it.
