Artist tagging help

Posted under General

To figure out artist names yourself, looks like you'll want to read howto:pixiv's "Artist Naming" section, and howto:artist. Of course, knowing how to read and look up Japanese will make things easier, but you might be able to get by with howto:artist's tips for simple cases.

3704024:

Pixiv display name = 茶交 = chamaji (kanji reading is given by the artist here. ヂ becomes ji according to howto:romanize)
Twitter display name = 茶交
Name given on personal website = 茶交
Seems clear to me, chamaji.

----------

5810557:

Pixiv display name = 吉田。 = "yoshida." (reading is from their website URL's "yosidaya" and the fact that this is a common Japanese name).
Twitter display name = 吉田。
Name given on personal website = 吉田。
Circle name = 吉田屋。 = "yoshidaya."
Pixiv username = kbkbhihi
Twitter username = kbkbhihi

"yoshida" is too common of a name, so it needs a qualifier. But I don't think the circle name of "yoshidaya" would help much as a qualifier; "ya" roughly means "room" here, and it's a common suffix for circles. So I guess the next best qualifier is their username, kbkbhihi.

Also, the artist seems rather intent on using a dot at the end of their name. Seems there's a few other artist tags that respect the end dot too, such as yellowpaint. and kamaseinu. So assuming that is what we generally do, I'd go with yoshida._(kbkbhihi).

----------

809198:

Pixiv display name: 栗月 = kuritsuki (reading is from their Twitter username, and the fact that these are common readings for these kanji)
Twitter display name: 栗月ロリ (just has "loli" at the end)
Seems fine to use kuritsuki.

----------

8988534:

Pixiv display name: 川´_ゝ`) (no way this is getting in the tag)
Twitter display name: うー☆みん (ignoring the star, this seems to be "woomin" going by the username)
Pixiv username: woominwoomin5
Twitter username: woominwoomin5

woomin doesn't conflict with any tag. I imagine it'd have some conflict potential among Korean names, but those aren't so common around here. So that seems fine to use IMO. If there's any doubt then woominwoomin5 is another option.

name on pixiv フジガクボウ

Looks like you've already got this covered at fujigakubou, seems right to me.

name on pixiv 稚野 (修☆羅★場☆中)

The artist is Taiwanese, and I really don't know much Chinese... but from what I can gather (e.g. at zhongwen.com), the non-parenthesized part can only be "zhi ye". There's not many artist names that even start with "zhi", so we might be able to get away with zhiye for a while. But if it looks like it needs a qualifier, like their Pixiv username, then maybe zhiye_(pixsa8645).

I'm not too familiar with Chinese name guidelines here, so I'm not sure if zhiye or zhi_ye is better. Also, I have no idea if the parenthesized part of their display name is an alternate name, a temporary status, or what. So it could be good if someone who knows more Chinese helped here.

name on pixiv 盆簿凡

No pronunciation given, it seems. My best guess on the pronunciation is "bonbobon". The second kanji in particular seems like a rare kanji for names, going by the Names and places dictionary at jisho.org; so I am going to guess that this is not a real name. If you look at the kanji as words and not names, you still can't put even two kanji together to form a coherent word. So if you look at them individually, the first kanji can only be "bon" and the second can only be "bo". Third has more than one possibility, but one of the common ones is "bon" which seems to fit here.

So it could be bonbobon maybe. If you search the Danbooru artists for "*bonbo*" then you'll see a few other similar names, so another idea is to reduce ambiguity by qualifying with the Pixiv username, bonbobon_(tempura2nd). And if the reading guess seems risky (I certainly can't fault you if you think so), then you could just use their Pixiv username, tempura2nd.

Can anybody double-check this artist's name for me? Or come up with a better translation, altogether?

I came up with "Goddess Petalody" and went ahead with using it. But, if there's a better translation, I'd like to use it.

We don't translate artist names, only transliterate (romanize) them. This one should be megami_benka (or megami_benka_(gfrggfrg47)).

Taiwanese artist, Japanese name. shiino_(pixsa8645).

The parenthesized part means "in the midst of carnage," which is probably flair and can be left out.

Because no one provides an answer for me, I'd tag these artists based from their pixiv nicknames, reebi and isshiki_koi. Am I spelling it right?

Though google is bashed for it's translations (and rightfully so), it's pretty good with single words, small names, and/or a good number of small phrases.

Reebi seems fine. And the translation I got for the other one was "ichi_irokoi" (it translated out as "One Iroquois").
They should be fine and, if not, the wiki can always be edited, accordingly. (o-o)b

I think isshiki_koi or isshoku_koi sound more likely than ichi_irokoi.

From artist's profile:

一色恋(ひとしきれん)。
もしくは 一色(いっしき)の名前で活動しています。

一色恋 (Hitoshiki Ren)
I also work under the name 一色(Isshiki).

So, Hitoshiki_Ren or Isshiki. Latter is not uncommon so it might potentially conflict with other names in the future, so let's go with the former.

GoogleTranslate is bad for transliteration. Same goes with single words and small names, as it can mess up horribly due to lack of context. Set phrases miiight work, but you'll miss out if the author is using them in a more literal manner or when puns are involved.

So, no, GoogleTranslate can go die in a fire.

(For languages with ideographic elements, e.g. Kanji/Hanzi).

busujima_(kusahana) - The account name is only a string of numbers, but when looking up an old saucenao pic, his username used to be kusahana, so I think that's as good as anything else since there's no other links.

Okay, thanks a lot!

EDIT: And this one ?

http://www.pixiv.net/member.php?id=1092706
Seems his nickname is "ワタリガラスの隠れ家"
So "Watarigarasu no Kakurega"?
But then his twitter account and Pixiv ID use Raven, so should we translate it as "Hideout of Raven" or let it in Japanese ?

Leave it as the Japanese transliteration. If you need a disambiguating tag, the account name can go in parentheses.
