Per its wiki entry:

Images featuring only male characters, or with an overwhelming emphasis on male characters. Do not use on male-to-female genderswaps, or any image with an easily noticeable female presence. (You'd think this would be obvious, but apparently it's not.)

I didn't think "male" was supposed to apply to "otoko no ko" characters in the first place. I've always only used it for characters that actually look male.

The #girls tags are sometimes used even when they are a minor presence in the image, so there's a problem with going through with a mass update. post #420310 is one example (I would still remove "male" for the above reason, but if we are tagging otoko no ko characters as "male" then it would need to remain).

Updated

otoko_no_ko is confusing in romaji, that "ko" can be two different words, boy/girl/kid (子) or girl only (娘), same pronunciation. Japanese use it intentionally but when written out, it's immediately understood. In romaji, they don't look different.

I'd like to propose the following alias (or mass edit + DONOTUSE for male):

create alias male -> male_focus

That would be consistent with solo_focus (and cat_focus). It would no longer be inconsistent with nearly all other object type tags (e.g. cat, sword, car), which denote any significant presence of the tagged object type, not only exclusive or dominant presence.

I like this idea. I can't tell you how often I'd need to fix male tags in the past. male focus wouldn't have the same ambiguity that male does.
