Hungry Mom is probably crying from a mix of emotions, but I’d wager a good majority of it is gratitude. Mother Superior can (and probably did) promise her that her daughter will never go hungry again, and that she’ll get a good education and make good friends. But that does mean Hungry Mom won’t see her daughter as often, and her admitting she can’t raise her alone in her current circumstances.

Indeed, Mother Superior is doing what should be done as told to us by the Lord. Help others as best you can by what means you can. Hungry nun mom is losing her precious daughter but it means she'll be safe, fed and educated. But that pain, it is real..... I know it all too well.
