As I recall, the caucus race was meant to help everyone dry off from swimming in Alice's tears, so it's actually a clever bilingual pun. Sadly, the wordplay doesn't translate.

I'm pretty sure in the original cartoon energon is basically alchohol to them. It's also their source of power. So they're basically robots fueled by alchohol, who waged a million year long war for more booze.
