People hate Shinji because they hate the idea of how somebody would actually react in that kind of situation.
he's one of the best anime male characters of all time, the sooner people accept this the better off they will be...but oh no they have to hate him because they see alot of their worst qualities in him. I'm sorry that most people want to see perfect characters who never develope...argh it makes me angry :)

ugh really dislike the 'vote down' feature.
Anyway in opinion. People dislike him for a number of reasons that people like him. I think the general acceptance is the fact that "he is a kid with a lot of weight on his shoulders / he manages to tough things out / kind of cute etc". But it is how "woe is me / i'm a black hole / push everyone trying to help me personality" that gets to people as well. It is like he wants to go suicide and take everyone with him because he hurts... he can be a real downer.
He had two females out preform him when it came to using the Units, and life wise, they didn't exactly whine about how much life sucks every episode. I can admire Shinji for at least trying to be brave, and certainly being a different Shounen character in comparison to the copy/paste personalities of 2000 onward.
I wouldn't call him the best, but he is rather interesting.
Shinji is the reason I quit Shounen anime in the first place. And it went downward from there (Elfen Lied, FLCL). So you can thank him I got on this place after transitioning from "I liked Japanese cartoons" to "why are all those music flash animations featuring a red miko, a blonde witch or a school girl with rabbit ears? Where do they come from?".
Shiji is so obsolete by now is not a surprise people hate him less. That happens frequently when you are forgotten.
There's a character, Bright Noa, who seems to be well-known among those in the Gundam fandom for slapping people so they get their act together. He apparently slaps Shinji in a Super Robot Wars game.

Thanks. I wish danbooru gave people a notification when they got quoted/replied too.

Pretty sure that it is Kaman SH-2 Seasprite based on the color scheme, the helicopter's markings indicating that it is meant to be part of HC-2, and Intrepid being listed online as having operated them during the mid-1960s.
