uss hornet (cv-8)
The third Yorktown-class aircraft carrier of the United States Navy. It earned four battle stars for combat service in the Pacific Theater of World War II. This tag is for depictions of the ship itself, as well as for personifications outside those of established franchises.
After launching the Doolittle Raid on Tokyo and participating in the Battle of Midway, it was involved in the extended campaign around Guadalcanal and the Solomon Islands chain. After being crippled by Japanese air attack during the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands, and in the face of an approaching Japanese surface force, Hornet was abandoned by her crew and left adrift and on fire to be found by said Japanese surface force. Deeming her (as the Americans had) too damaged to repair, the Japanese commander ordered her scuttled. On October 27, 1942, Hornet was sent to her grave by torpedoes from destroyers Akigumo and Makigumo, but not before the crew of the former decided to sketch the wreck as it was too dark to take pictures (as depicted in Kantai Collection fanart here).
Her wreck was located in late January 2019.
