uss hornet (cv-12)
An Essex-class aircraft carrier of the United States Navy, CV-12 was originally ordered with the assigned name Kearsarge, but was renamed Hornet while under construction after CV-8 was sunk at the Battle of Santa Cruz in 1942. Hornet was commissioned in 1943 and earned thirteen battle stars from combat service in the Pacific Theater of World War II and the Vietnam War. It was also a recovery vessel for several space missions from the Apollo program, most famously Apollo 11. Hornet was decommissioned for the last time in 1970, and is currently a museum ship in Alameda, California, near the city of San Francisco.
