top-load washing machine
A type of electric washing machine where the opening to load it is on the top.
Inside the machine the clothes go into a vertical drum where an agitator or impeller inside will move the clothes around while in operation. They tend to be less common in places where space is a premium as the opening at the top makes it difficult to stack with other washing machines or clothes dryers to save in floor space. Some units do come in a stacked configuration with a dryer on top, but this is usually done through restricting the opening to the washing machine making it more difficult to put in and take out clothing.
As the opening is on the top, this type of washing machine does not need to have a locking mechanism on the door to prevent people from opening it while it operation like a front-load washing machine.
