History
Moored inboard of West Virginia, she escaped damage for the most part during the attack on Pearl Harbor. She was quickly restored to service in escort duties before being recalled to the West Coast in mid-1942 for an extensive reconstruction a la South Dakota.
Re-entering active service in 1943, she participated in shore bombardment duties from the Aleutians to Leyte, joining her sister in the battle line that engaged Nishimura's fleet in the last battleship-to-battleship engagement in history.
